Points! I'm reviving the game.
[More:]
Today you can get points for:

Feeding an animal (2 points per animal)
Wearing socks (3 points)
Not drinking any caffeine (5 points)
How many dress shirts are in your closet (1 point each)
How many dreams you can remember from last night (4 points each)
Measuring something with a ruler/yardstick/calipers/tape measure (10 points one time use only)
Eating grapes (3 points)

Tie breakers:
2 points for each doorknob in your home
3 points for each magazine subscription you have
I fed one animal today: me. 2 pts.
I am wearing two socks, so 6 pts.
No caffeine! 5 pts.
Dress shirts? No idea. 8 pts. sounds about right.
4 dreams last night (thank you, melatonin; holy R.E.M. rebound). 16 pts.
The only thing I measured this morning was the barometric pressure using my watch. Which, while geeky, is worth 0 pts.
I finished my grapes a couple of days ago. =(

My home has handles rather than knobs. Do those count? 4 knob-handles. Not counting entrances to the building that are external to my apartment proper. Also not counting knobs on cabinet doors.
I'm subscribed to at least 2 magazines as a result of various memberships (AMA, AMNH).

I totally dreamt that I was looking at some message put up in the hills like Hollywood lettering that went something like "was [college? something like that?] worth it for my [lots of digits-priced] car" but the phone rang before I saw if the message was "yes" or "no"-inclined
posted by Firas 27 September | 09:58
goodness eide I wrote 'we have handles rather than knobs' and deleted it and then I glanced at that sentence of yours after hitting post and was like WHUT JUST HAPPENED
posted by Firas 27 September | 09:59
Wife fed the furry livestock this AM.
Working from home, so no socks
I'm writing so I've had caffeine.
My shirts are all in a wardrobe, no closet
I had a dream about soup - 4 points
No measuring, no grapes

20 door knobs, we have lots of doors (and very few closets) - 40 points
5 magazine subscriptions - 15 points.

Dress shirts: 8.
Dreams I remember from last night: 1.
Doorknobs: 5 (front door, bedroom, bathroom, closet, closet.) Wait, do I get to count each side? If so, then it's 8.
Subscriptions: 1 (Bon Appetit.)

So, either 9 + 6 or 9 + 9. Weak, punch.

0 Feeding an animal
0 Wearing socks
0 Not drinking any caffeine (Not yet, but my espresso is brewing RIGHT NOW, so excuse my while I go get it)
1 How many dress shirts are in your closet (do I get to claim The Fella's one dress dhirt if we share a closet?)
4 How many dreams you can remember from last night
0 Measuring something with a ruler/yardstick/calipers/tape measure
0 Eating grapes

Wow, poor showing. If I'd made it to the tie-breaker, I would've cleaned up on doorknobs: our tiny home has 12.

Yay, I thought I'd killed it!

3 points for socks.
6 points for dress shirts assuming the US definition: "a garment with a collar, a full-length opening at the front from the collar to the hem, and sleeves with cuffs."

9 points total
Tiebreak: 14 for doorknobs, assuming handles on each side count.
posted by TheophileEscargot 27 September | 10:37
assuming handles on each side count.

Hey, I only counted one side, I'd have forty of them if we counted both. Not counting the extra doors stacked in the garage.
posted by octothorpe 27 September | 11:05
At the moment, I have 23 points. My animals wish I had fed them by now but it is not dinner time yet.
posted by stynxno 27 September | 11:14
OK, you're tempting me to feed the neighbors' dogs (up to 6 may pass by my front door, plus one wandering cat...)
It's getting warm today and I'm not going out so no competition will make me wear socks...
The last time I went the whole day without Cherry Coke or Dr Pepper, I slept through most of it...
1 dress shirt. Kept for formal emergencies. But my dad even opted out of having a formal funeral service, so it hasn't stirred since I moved here. (I did inherit several ties from him)
Normally my dreams fade from memory pretty fast, but last night I dreamed I was trapped in an Iron Man mask and covered with smelly body paint and I woke up in a coughing fit. Weird, but 4 points.
No measuring jobs on the official agenda, but I have two measuring tapes in my bedside drawer, because I couldn't find any for a week a while ago...
Out of grapes, no store had them on sale this week.

So 5 points with potential for some more...

Bonuses?
Three doors with knobs on both sides, front, closet and bathroom. The kitchen has a pocket door with no knob.
I dropped all magazine subscriptions last year but I still get a daily local newspaper - there are two local magazines that land in my mailbox monthly, but you don't have to subscribe, just have a SLO address.

I feel pointless.

My cat claims I didn't feed her, but don't you believe it! I go lots of dress shirts. I can think of at least 6 NOT in my closet but I'm scared to actually go look in the closet and see what's there. I think I only had 1 grape because I prefer the fresh figs. I ate the grape because it looked lonely. I had a weird dream which, thankfully, I no longer remember now. The caffeine helped me forget it. I only wear socks on Mondays and Wednesdays and today is Tuesday. 22 doorknobs (I skipped the handles and the external knobs). Oh, I forgot closets--there are 8 more. There are dress shirts in those closets but I'm not going to look.

Feeding an animal: 3 animals twice already! 6 points
Wearing socks: 3 points
Not drinking any caffeine: 0 points
How many dress shirts are in your closet? 5 points, I guess, I'm just using "collared button-down" as a definition.
How many dreams you can remember from last night: 3--I was wakened often last night. 12 points.
Measuring something with a ruler/yardstick/calipers/tape measure: 10 points
Eating grapes: 0 points
Total: 36 points

Tie breakers:
2 points for each doorknob in your home: 13 (counting one per door, not counting the two exterior hallway doors or any closet doors) for 26 points.
3 points for each magazine subscription you have: 3 points
Tie-breakers: 29 additional points

Yay! Points is back!

Feeding an animal (2 points per animal: 2 points
Wearing socks (3 points): yup, for bike ride to train. 3 points.
Not drinking any caffeine (5 points): Glad there aren't negative points for this.
How many dress shirts are in your closet (1 point each): At least 30 points.
How many dreams you can remember from last night (4 points each): Zip. As usual.
Measuring something with a ruler/yardstick/calipers/tape measure (10 points one time use only): Nope.
Eating grapes (3 points): Not today. Though there were a lot of raisins in my breakfast cereal.

Total: 35 points.

Tie breakers:
2 points for each doorknob in your home: 32 points. (Counting the knobs in the interior of the house only.)
3 points for each magazine subscription you have: 22 points. (Smithsonian, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, The Economist, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Runners World, Self.)

Feeding an animal (2 points per animal)- 6 points. Daughter fed the cat today.
Wearing socks (3 points)Nope. Day off. 0
Not drinking any caffeine (5 points) Nope, are you mad? 0 points.
How many dress shirts are in your closet (1 point each)Define dress shirt. Hmmm. I buy big men's dress or sorta dress shirts at the thrift store and wear them over camisoles, so let's say 4 points.
How many dreams you can remember from last night (4 points each) My old friend Lu and I were standing on a boardwalk while caterers carrying huge trays of food hurried by. None of the food was for us. 4 points.
Measuring something with a ruler/yardstick/calipers/tape measure (10 points one time use only) Yep! I'm in the throes of redecorating the living room so the dogs will no longer have access to the picture window that they're about to break from jumping up at every time somebody walks down the street. 10 points.
Eating grapes (3 points)No. I looked at some, though, does that count?

24 points! Whoo! Oh wait. . . oh I didn't win. Damnit. Oh well. I did the tie breakers anyway.

Tie breakers:
2 points for each doorknob in your home 18 doorknobs - 2 per door, 9 doors in my weird maze of a house - makes 36 big points.
3 points for each magazine subscription you have - 3 points for the New Yorker.

How many dress shirts are in your closet (1 point each) Mmm, maybe eight? That's counting biz-caz stuff, not counting flannel and canvas and whatnot.
How many dreams you can remember from last night (4 points each)
Measuring something with a ruler/yardstick/calipers/tape measure (10 points one time use only)
Eating grapes (3 points)

Tie breakers:
2 points for each doorknob in your home I've got eight points--I'm not going to count doorknobs.
3 points for each magazine subscription you have 1 for The Baffler, I guess.

No animals... except for me. EAT DRUM! EAT DRUM!
Socks: sadly, yes. (3)
Caffeine: nope
Dress shirts: oh, geez, my dress shirts are not everyone else's dress shirts! Let's say five. And none of them really fit. (5)
Dreams: usually I do remember them, but not last night.
Measurement: We can get points for something scheduled, for later today, right? I can almost guarantee you that I will measure later in the day, as I started knitting something last night. (10)
Grapes: ooh, no. But three days ago, I had several in some tasty, tasty sangria.

TOTAL: 18

Tiebreakers:
Doorknobs: 18 in my apartment, 24 counting common areas. (Not counting the wee knobs on my folding closet doors, of which there are 4 -- or 12 if you count the doors we took off the kitchen!)
Magazine subscriptions: 3, I think (Entertainment Weekly,
On Wisconsin -- the alumni magazine, which my office writes anyway -- and PieceWork)
posted by Madamina 27 September | 13:36
Hmm, I forgot Wellesley, my alumnae magazine. Thanks Madamina! That makes my tiebreaker total for that category 25.

Could it be I might finally WIN a game of Points??? Yay dress shirts!
posted by bearwife 27 September | 13:44
looks like bearwife is the winner so far!
You're on for tomorrow unless a late challenger arrives.

As for me:
2 Feeding an animal
0 Wearing socks
5 Not drinking any caffeine
17 How many dress shirts are in your closet
4 How many dreams you can remember from last night
0 Measuring something with a ruler/yardstick/calipers/tape measure
0 Eating grapes

34

16 = 8 doorknobs
18 = 6 magazines (I have a problem) New Yorker, Maxim, Surfing, Town and Country, Elle, NY Mag

0 Feeding an animal (the mister did it)
0 Wearing socks (in this weather?!)
0 Not drinking any caffeine (almost done with my first diet cola of the day)

4 How many dreams you can remember from last night (had an aunt-in-law in it who's never been in a dream before)
0 Measuring something with a ruler/yardstick/calipers/tape measure (way too early in the day for that)
0 Eating grapes (too bad it wasn't strawberries)

Tie breakers:
20 points for doorknobs (not counting closets which have a knob, but not like a regular doorknob)
0 points for magazine subscriptions (been a long time since I've had a subscription)

octothorpe- how many doors are stacked in your garage? And what for?
This city girl doesn't get it.

Door handles don't count. They have to be knobs. Both sides of the door count. If one side is a handle and the other is a knob, you get 1 pt. I make very specific rules.

Feeding an animal - 0
Wearing socks - 3
Not drinking any caffeine - 0
How many dress shirts are in your closet - 0 (no closet because I live in a shed where my clothes hang on a bar screwed to the wall)
How many dreams you can remember from last night - 0
Measuring something with a ruler/yardstick/calipers/tape measure - 10
Eating grapes - 0

TOTAL - 13 (wow, I suck at this game)

Wearing socks - 3
Not drinking any caffeine - is this a joke?
How many dress shirts are in your closet - 6
How many dreams you can remember from last night - 0. I rarely remember dreams.
Measuring something with a ruler/yardstick/calipers/tape measure - 0
Eating grapes - 0

Tie breakers:
2 points for each doorknob in your home - just 1. I have lots of door handles, which are different.
3 points for each magazine subscription you have - 9

Feeding an animal: 3 members of the 4-legged crew so 6
Wearing socks: 3
No caffeine: 0 [I was in training all day and needed that darn Dr. Pepper]
dress shirts: 3 or so [only worn for interviews as I prefer knit shirts otherwise]
dreams you can remember from last night: 0
Measuring something: 0
Eating grapes: 0 [they went bad and I tossed them this morning :o( ]

Tie breakers:
2 points for each doorknob in your home: 6 doors with both sides and 2 doors with one side
3 points for each magazine subscription you have: 3 [only because I can't figure out how to get the alumni society to quit sending me the things]

So 6+3+3 = 12 with ((6*2+2)*2)+3 = 31 if my maths haven't completely abandoned me today [re: all day in training]

Three or four for spare parts. We're restoring a house from 1865 and you can't just buy doors and hardware at Home Depot so you never, ever throw anything away. For what it's worth, I'm right in the center of the city here too; we just have garages with our city houses here.
posted by octothorpe 27 September | 18:29
We're restoring a house - One of the neatest stores I found in Venice specialized in antique hardware and period-authentic reproductions. My italian isn't too great, but I believe the store was certified by the city's historical preservation overseers.
posted by Ardiril 27 September | 18:37
dg - a shed? The house isn't done yet?
posted by deborah 27 September | 19:03
Well, I have recounted doorknobs, since each doorknob counts and since I actually missed a couple which are knobs not handles. 29 doorknobs for 58 points worth of tie-breaking doorknobs!
posted by crush-onastick 27 September | 22:07
deborah - short story is no. Long story is, well, long and painful and involves tales of a collapsing construction company and the resulting finance disasters. Almost sorted and about to re-commence construction with a goal of moving in before Christmas (year to be determined).

+ 2 for feeding Big Kitty (no new pictures, or I would supply one as is the custom)
maybe + 2 for feeding Big Kitty's pets, a pair of stinkbugs I have trapped in a bell jar for his amusement
+ 3 for socks
+ 0 because of 2 cups of coffee, plus some Cherry Coke Zero as a mixer; this is a lot of caffeine in one day for me
+ 3 for shirts
+ 4 for one dream that left only vague remembrances of a house made of rusted-out cars and Spanish moss
+ 10 for measuring (cinque! dieci! venti! trenta!) to see if my bed will fit along a shorter wall. Happily, it will.
+ 0 for no grapes
= not quite enough + happiness that Points! is resurrected

If it were up to sheer doorknobbiness, this house would be a winner; every room has at least four glass ones, and some have up to ten, all from the 1920s.
posted by notquitemaryann 27 September | 23:57
So who won? I have missed points, it's something to look forward to even though I'm not usually in the running to win. I do like it when people get into the competition.
