Musical comfort food. Do you have songs that feel like musical comfort food to you? They make you feel warm and fuzzy even when you're down? Here's one of mine...[More:]

Whenever I hear this song, I want to wrap up in it like it's my favorite blanket: Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, "Don't Leave Me This Way." Teddy Pendergrass' voice is like velvet on this song.
The entire Benefit album by Jethro Tull.

It certainly has an appropriate name: "Good to me", Eric Johnson.

The original cast recording of "Falsettos".

Torn and Frayed by The Rolling Stones. Those chiming opening chords make me exhale and relax immediately. And then Mick Taylor's slick little slide guitar solo that manages to be tight and loose at the same time (which sort of embodies the feel of that whole record) ties the whole thing up in a bow. Probably the rock song I've listened to more than any other over the course of my life. It's like a cigarette -- there's never a bad time for a cigarette! Everything that happens, good bad or indifferent, is an excuse for a cigarette. "Torn and Frayed" is the same way.

Reeling in the Years by Steely Dan.

BP, I had no idea it was Teddy Pendergrass singing on "Don't Leave Me This Way".

Man, when I'm down, the last thing I want is upbeat music. Uptempo, maybe, but not upbeat. I like my songs to leave me completely destroyed so that I can begin rebuilding myself piece by piece.

A few staples:
Rush - Between the Wheels
Refreshments - Nada
Presidents - Headin' Out (which bears some similarities to Deathwish by the Police, but is a much more evocative song, for me)

Because the cheese levels are off the charts with this one.
Because I can no longer hear this without thinking of the adorable boy in this video.
And because I am still a 7 year old at heart.

And one more, slightly calmer.

Stacy Kidd feat. Joi Williams - "Don't Let No One Get U Down" (or just "Don't Let Nobody") That longer (8+ minute!) version is nice, but I like the 6 minute edit a bit more.

Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty. He was like the Steely Dan of folk.

The Grateful Dead from the early to mid-seventies usually hits the spot for me when I need it. Something like this.

OK, I'm in love with your final choice, monkeys with typewriters. Thanks!

My own absolute favorite song ever is Here Comes the Sun, and the reason is that it always gives me a sense of joy. And there's something very strengthening and warming about Crooked Still's version of Ain't No Grave.

Wow, I have enjoyed hearing everybody's picks, especially the ones I wasn't familiar with. More! More!

"Bad Moon Rising" by CCR, and almost anything by Elton John.

Either gotta be The Chariot by the Cat Empire or perhaps Days Like These. Actually, most things by The Cat Empire cheer me up.

I've bounced around to the Beatles' "Good Morning Good Morning" since before I can remember and I still giggle when the horse joins in.

Glad you liked it, bearwife! These are fun. Makes me wonder why nobody comes to the mefi listening room anymore... (I'll just leave this here).
