Reassure me that I am paranoid! All of my stuff had to be put in a storage pod in my driveway after the hurricane (my apartment is currently down to the studs). It occurred to me last night that maybe I should be worried about bed bugs living in the pod (before it came to me) and infesting my stuff.[More:]I live in NJ, not terribly far from NY where there is a significant bed bug problem. So, today I did an internet search for bed bugs in pods and came up with nada. I also called Pods and asked them if they treat for bed bugs (they spray the pods, I don't know with what) and if they have ever had any complaints from people becoming infested with them after using a pod ("I have worked here 5 years and I've never gotten a complaint about that"). I also called an exterminator and he said he has never gotten a call for bed bugs in any storage unit and if he was me he wouldn't worry about it. He said that it would cost $400 for a bed bug sniffing dog to sniff around the pod and that they aren't even all that reliable.

But I have this lingering fear because I know people have gotten them from moving vans and non-portable storage facilities. Should I just calm the hell down and not worry about it? Would you worry? I am high strung as it is and all of the stuff going on in my life lately has really kicked up my anxiety. I guess I am looking for your voices of reason. I really don't want to pay hundreds of dollars to treat something that very likely isn't even an issue, but I also don't want to get bed bugs.
I think you're doing what my husband does, which is to extend his worry to encompass anything he can think of, so it seems normal to me. What I do is to encourage him to concentrate his worry/anxiety on the things that a) are problems right now, and not just potential ones and b) he can do something about.

In other words, cross that bridge when you come to it. On the other hand, I live in the UK and we don't really have bedbugs here...

You've had a stressful time and it's normal to be anxious! Good luck with the cleanup stuff.

You don't want to confuse possibilities with probabilities.

There's nothing in there for them to live on in-between jobs though. And no fabric seats or anything for them to dig into like in a moving van.

I would imagine that Pods is well aware of this problem and inspects thoroughly and fumigates regularly. Even a rumor of such would be enough to seriously damage their reputation.
