We had a couple generations of gerbils. They made pretty good pets. However, they were terrible parents. One of our gerbils was pregnant when she came from the shop, so we had two gerbils, then we had 5 gerbil babies, which was pretty cool from the miracle-of-life angle and all. But then one of the adult gerbils sort of ate one of the babies, and another died from general runtiness. This may have something to do with my relative unsentimentality about "natural instincts" in parenting. The three that survived were with me into my teens. They are super cute.
Our gliders have culled joeys before, and it's difficult to grasp - especially when you see it - but it happens a lot with small mammals.
Speaking on gerbils, I only ever knew one when I was a kid. I think it's name was Cookie and it bit everyone. I've been wary of owning one since then. Now that I know they can wear hats, I'm rethinking this position.
