What would you save if your house were on fire? [More:]
My dog
My husband's carefully curated baby book (my mother-in-law did an excellent job!)
My grandmother's jewelry (including her well-worn rosaries)
My computer/ipad

When I was a little kid, I used to hold fire drills with my stuffed animals, which in my mind, were the only things worth saving.

What would you drag out of a burning building?
Cat. Hard drives. Other material objects have no value. Exit stage left.

Kids
Cats
Computer/hard drive
Photo albums (childhood pictures that are not digitized)
This pair of wooden hands my dad made for me when i was a kid, also the wooden jewelry box he made.

Realistically though, I'm not sure I would remember anything besides kids and cats, when it comes down to it.

External HD, medications, purse, passport, Mr. Bun (stuffed animal), latest journal, Last-Herald Mage books.

I keep meaning to run a fire drill in my house, but it's one of those things I keep forgetting. And I suppose I should change the batteries in my smoke detector too, but it's still blinking so I guess it's okay?

Cat, people, phone, computers, purse-- how much time do we have? Instant inferno or flaming wall? I'm just thinking about what's immediately at hand and need for survival post homelessness. Does jewelery survive inferno? Will I be awakened from bed, in which case i know what to grab on the way out of the building? It would never occur to me to grab medications on the way out of a fire, that's advanced thinking in my book.

Kid. Kid's blankie. My purse (becuase I put my phone and wallet in it every evening before bed).

My great-grandpa's violin, my wallet, my go-bag, and my strongbox. They're all conveniently located for hasty departure. The strongbox is apparently fireproof, but I don't want to test it.

Cats. We had a fire in our building when we weren't home. Luckily, the only damage to our unit was smoke and water. But we got home when they were still putting it out and the only panic I had was that my kitties were okay. A fireman went in with full turn out gear on and came out with two terrified cats clinging to him. I was so happy I really didn't care about anything else that was in there.

Off topic: A neighbor saw my cats in our car while we were watching the fire being put out. She claimed one of them was her cat and we had stolen it during the confusion. The apartment management had their pictures on file so we could prove they were both ours, but the woman was adamant. It was very strange.

my ass

(folks, smoke can overcome you in seconds; they've found people dead inches from the front door... don't mess around; get low, get your loved ones, and get out)

Granny Weatherwax ....
Actually, I'd save the old man and the dogs.
If I had time, I'd try to grab my backup hard drive. There's a lot of recent work I wouldn't want to lose.
