My Scooby is plucking again [More:] It seems to happen every year at about this time. For some reason the feathers on one leg or the other bother her enough that preening becomes self mutilation. So she plucks the feathers of the upper leg. And then she starts to chew at her skin. Eventually she opens a wound.

This has happened every year. Always in the heat of the summer, even though she's in an air conditioned house. And yes I understand that the AC might be the problem along with a thousand other variables. If it's really bad, like two years ago, the avian vet we go to prescribes Elavil in liquid form and an antibiotic.

We had hoped against hope that it wouldn't happen this year, but it did.

When it gets bad, I sit up all night with her on my shoulder. When she's asleep I know it. When she makes the move to the leg, I know it. Then I bring up my finger to stop her and she hisses at me like a little lizard. But she understands, I think. Neither of us get much sleep.

Eventually, slowly, she gets better. Little spikes show on the limb. They pop open showing brand new feathers. Everything gets better.

I love my birdy, and I want her to get better, NOW!

I thought this would be a post about "Scooby sense," "plucking" when something was about to happen.

But I hope your bird improves. Is she a parrot? I love the big birds.

She's a Quaker parrot. A little green and grey dragon. She's sleeping now. For a while I thought I'd have to stay up with her. But she wanted regular "nite nite".

Flew to her cage in the bedroom and asked for nite, nite seeds. That's sunflower seeds. And she's quiet now. We'll probably take her to the avian vet tomorrow. Thanks for asking.

She sounds like a sweetie... you're a good caretaker. I know birds can be very emotional. I wonder if a bird companion would help.

This is such a perfect little metaphor for hope: little spikes turning to feathers.

We had a cat who worried at a specific spot until it was bloody and raw --- some nerve disorder, the vets said. I remember how her pain and anxiety pulled my heartstrings every day, mostly because she couldn't understand what was wrong.

I hope Scooby heals up soon!

If it's the same time every year, could it be allergies?

I've done the sitting-up-with-pet-keeping-them-from-hurting-self for one reason or another too many times myself. Sympathy.

Hope she's over it soon!

Thanks deborah, for the pic. I'm on a new computer and haven't transferred anything from my old box, which has all the pics of Scooby. That was perfect. A bunch of little green dragons.

Great pic.
