Some sad, but hopeful news... [More:]
Last Friday night, my mom, who's 96 years young, fell and broke her right femur. She had surgery to insert a steel rod into the bone to support it on Saturday. Yesterday she was well enough to be transferred to the rehabilitation floor at the nursing home. She's doing much better, knock on wood, which I am very grateful for. There were a few days there where I was really scared she might not recover. Luckily, she has no complicating medical issues, but she's so petite and frail. She's had knee and hip replacements on the other leg before and recovered well, but she's older now. Still, I'm encouraged.

I found out what had happened when I showed up at the house on Saturday to take my mom to lunch and found her car in the garage, but no mom. I called my brother, who's a doctor and who lives nearby (I'm about an hour and a half away), and as soon as he heard my voice, I could tell he realized he'd forgotten to call me. I wasn't mad, just mildly annoyed; he and my other brother had been at the hospital with her in the middle of the night Friday. Luckily I made it to the hospital in time to be with her before surgery, along with my other brother. And luckily my mom was wearing an "I've fallen and can't get up" alarm button hooked into the house alarm around her neck, and she was able to call for help right away.

Yesterday I brought her snacks and a couple of six-packs of Ensure to help boost her calories and nutrition, since she has such trouble eating hospital food. She was feeling weak, but after a couple of Ensures, which she was able to suck down with a straw very well, she felt stronger. At the hospital, she had a lot of pain and, mercifully, was on some strong pain medicine that really put her in la-la land, but at the rehab. facility last night, she was resting more comfortably on less pain meds and was a lot more talkative and more herself. Poor little thing. It'll be a long road.
I am sorry to hear... Broken hips are rough on the elderly.

Oh, that is rough. But it sounds like your Mom got through it really well! So, like you said, said but hopeful. Thinking of you all, Pips.

Oh, how scary --- but it sounds like she's coming back well. That's encouraging! I'm sending good thoughts your way, so you'll have extras to send on to your mother... and some to keep for yourself.

Hope she feels better soon! I always bring some treats for hospitalized friends/family to give out to the hospital staff, so that they can feel like they have a bit more control over a difficult situation, and so that their room is more likely to get frequent check-ins. Maybe that would also help your mom?

Oh dear! Glad you were able to bring her some nice treats.

I'm glad it sounds like your mom is doing better. And you're a good kid to visit her. I currently work in an elder care facility and it's always good to see younger people come visiting.

Your mum has some good kids. :-) I hope she heals well and quickly.

Ugh! A rough experience all around, but I'm glad she's pulled through it so well, thus far. Good luck to her for an easy recovery!

Best of luck to her!

My Dad had a knee replacement recently, it's slow for the elderly to recover, but it gets better.

Brothers! Go figure. (I can say that cuz I am a brother who drives his sister nuts.)

Time to get her an iPhone and a Scrabble app.

Best to you both, Pips. Glad your brothers jumped right in to help her. I hope her recovery is non-eventful.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mom, and yes, I'm glad your brothers were able to be there. I'm sure they didn't mean to leave you out!

Best of luck to your mom and to you Pips! We'll keep your entire family in my prayers.

(also, if she's having issues with the food, it might be possible to bug the nutritionist on staff and have them provide ensure)

Sending out healing and strong-boned thoughts to your mom, Pips! She sounds like a pretty awesome woman. How could you live to be 96 and *not* be awesome?

Hi Pips, falls are so scary. Especially when you break your femur. Poor thing, how painful. I am glad she is feeling better and is in a good place.

Thank you so much everyone for all your good thoughts. It really means a lot. I'm going up to CT to see her today. I plan to bring her lots of magazines (she can't hear the TV too well, even with her hearing aid) and a cheese pizza (one of her favorite things to eat). I was also going to bring her some cherries, another of her favorites, but now I'm worried about the pits, so maybe I'll hold off on those. Every cherry season, she sings this song, "Cherries are ripe, cherries are ripe..."; I forget the rest -- something about the birds.

I'm pretty sure cheese pizza can fix anything - and bonus calcium to boot.

Is this your mom's cherry song? There's this one too, but I couldn't find any audio for it.

That must've been an alarming sight - the car but no mom. :[ How very fortunate she got help quickly. Safe travels going to visit her. Very sweet of you to bring her favorites along to enjoy! (((pips)))

Oh, Pips, I'm sorry to hear about your mom's accident, but by golly she's a strong woman, isn't she? She's in my prayers and thoughts, and so are you.
