The blinds are closed all along one side of the building I work in.[More:]Late yesterday afternoon, someone jumped off a building across the street and crashed through the roof of the (much lower) building next door. Lots of people saw it happen (including some of my staff) and the place feels really sad, which is unusual, because it's usually a noisy, happy office.

I've organised counsellors, dispensed hugs, told people to go home if they feel that would help etc. I can't help but feel cranky because someone has caused so much sadness for so many people, which over-rides the sadness that someone felt so bad they had to take such a drastic step.

Forgot - the blinds are closed because people who work along that side are looking down on a person-sized hole through the roof every time they glance out the window.

Ugh, that's awful dg. Not really much else to say beyond that :(

Wow. Good on you for taking care of your co-workers under such painful circumstances.

Oh, how awful! I'm so sorry. It sounds like you're handling the stress and potential trauma well, which is very encouraging.

... and from the 'adding insult to injury' department, an e-mail came around from HR to managers starting with 'A police/emergency services meeting occurred across the road from 30 [redacted] Street at approximately 1645hrs yesterday evening. Some staff may have witnessed this event.'

A 'meeting'? A person jumped to their death and you call it a fucking 'meeting'?

Ugh, sorry dg, that's a fucking drag. I've actually had this happen a couple of times. I appreciate the fact that you are being as sensitive to the event as you are. Much peace upon you and your surroundings. I feel for you.

You're a good boss, dg. I hope someone has thought to give you a hug.

That happened at the building next to my office. A young man asked to look at an apartment for rent. He didn't like it, it wasn't high enough and had no balcony, so he was shown one on the top floor. He opened the balcony door and jumped. Some people in our office saw it happen. His body could be seen from the DLR platform and it was there for over an hour before it was removed. There was a horrible number of rubberneckers who went up to the platform just to get a look.

I felt so sorry for the poor young woman who was showing him the apartment.
