21 July 2011

Not that it's hot and humid or anything... [More:]
... but while I was walking to work this morning, I noticed several buildings had condensation dripping down the windows on the outside.

According to the weather web site, the current dewpoint in Toronto is 23.6C (74.5F), so any surface colder than that will condense water. Yikes!

The forecasted high today is 38C (100F).

What's it like where you are?
Forecast for 97 here. I just hope that the AC units in the server lab at my office can keep up. We have so much hardware running in there that we've maxed out the possible amps that we can get flowing into the building so we don't have any power to spare. We're in the middle of a software system test cycle so that means that we've got hundreds of stress tests running on the systems, so all of the cpus and harddrives are working at their max and trying to keep all of those thousands of systems cool enough when it's almost a hundred out is tough.

Crossing my fingers that we don't brown-out the building today.

We've only got about 50 servers in our little computer room here, but as the guy responsible for all of them, I feel your pain octothorpe. I know our cooling systems were engineered to handle this and I get to go with the tech for the preventive maintenance inspections every 3 months, but nevertheless, extreme temperatures are where you tend to find out about any problems that were missed. I'll be keeping a close eye on things in there today, that's for sure.

I don't envy you guys who have to endure 100 degrees or more (it's only ever been that hot ONCE in this country, in 2003). But summer is being completely pathetic here in the UK. Today it's about 17 Celsius (63 F) and grey cloud. Yesterday, it rained. All weekend, it rained. Forecast is looking a bit brighter for Sunday though.

It'd be nice to have a few days of bright sunshine, and about 25 degrees (75ish).

Don't hate me because I'm in a temperate climate, but it's 55F at sunrise with a forecast high today (and for the next several days) about 76F. Meanwhile, about 30 miles inland from me, where they're holding the Mid-State Fair (San Luis Obispo's County Fair in disguise), it'll be highs of 90F or warmer for the run of the fair but lows in the 50s (pretty normal for the Fair Fortnight). Right on the coast we're looking at a 50-65F low-to-high, not summer-like at all. I sometimes feel guilty that my area is singlehandedly bringing the Average Global Temp down, making it harder to sell the concept of Global Warming, but I look at the blue sky and feel the breeze from the Pacific and think "life is good". THAT's why some people are hyping SLO as the "Happiest Town in America" so the rest of you can sit on it.

What we really need is to hear from some of the Buns Down Under where it's wintertime...

About like this, but forever. Been at least three weeks since we haven't hit triple digits. I think the worst day so far was when we hit 107. It's getting a bit old.

Capital Weather Gang is showing "Sunny and extremely hot and humid. 97-102" for the forecast.

It's currently running about 74 in the office and 53 in the stacks, with the humidity being wonky and so everytime I come out of the stacks, my glasses fog up. (The stacks are supposed to be at 50, but we know that sometimes it's hard to keep it there when the heat is like this.) We haven't started getting condensation on the roll doors, but I bet it will do that later today and over the weekend.

We are looking at a high of 101, with a heat index of 112 here in the Triangle of North Carolina. We are moving soon, and our new hometown is experiencing some pleasantly chilly temperatures that I long for right about now. By the time we get there (six weeks if bureaucratic crap doesn't hold us up *fingers crossed*) it will already be spring time and quite warm. I really want some cold weather right about now.

It's only 85 right now here, but it feels like mid-90s. The humidity is disgusting.

High of 39 with a heat index of 51. Very humid.
posted by arse_hat 21 July | 09:38
It's as hot as Satan's balls here in Chicago. We hit 100F yesterday (102F in Alsip) and today's heat index could be as high as 110F. I'm fine with the heat, but the humidity makes it unbearable. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that our A/C in the truck can keep up this weekend for our drive to and from Indiana.

Max 18C/64F. Min 13c/55F. Quite pleasant here in London, though it has rained pretty much every day for the last couple of months.

I keep trying to forget that I am only five subway stops away from the beach. It is not working.

It is actually cooler than usual here, and Ashland is usually around 90 degrees in mid summer, but it is only going to be around 80. I had spent a bit more to reserve a room at this hotel that does not have a sun-exposed wall/window and turns out we do not need it.

In NY, it always blew my mind that those stores around Times Square blast their a/c so much that you can be cool, standing on the sidewalk in front of them.

I wish you all cooler weather and dry breezes. Gaspode, I hope that Maddie does not go too bonkers being cooped inside. . .

As onefellswoop says, currently 58 and projected high 76. For most of this summer, today included, I would prefer it to be about 10 degrees warmer than it has been; it hasn't really felt like summer.

I'm with Sperose, with the added bonus of being in a building with "swamp chillers." Which means that I have cool air, but it's moist. I'm all...clammy.

As long as I don't go outside, my house is quite pleasant. We live on a wooded lot, with lots of natural shading. We have fans running in every room. As soon as you step outside, though, it's a goddamn blast furnace. My husband walked the dog before 8 am and reported that it was already unbearably warm. My beautiful old magnolia tree in my front yard is dying because we have had three dry summers in a row. We were supposed to go play tennis tonight but that ain't gonna happen.

My sister in law lives in Seattle and has had the exact opposite experience this summer. What we wouldn't do to trade places for a few days....

88°F outside, so cold inside (AC) that I'm wearing a sweater. Going for a walk soon to warm up.

290°K and I love it.
Could be sunnier though.

High today approaching 100ºF. Heat index approaching 120ºF. Good lord.

High of 96 forecast today, which is dead average for this time of year. It's been unseasonably cool all month, though. I guess it's okay that it finally feels like it's supposed to. At least it's not over 100, which isn't unusual.

High of high 60s here today, but right now it's 96% humidity and it's NOT raining. In spite of the cool weather, I'm sweating. Blergh.

The air conditioners are struggling to keep up. We have one in the bedroom and one in the livingroom. With the room doors closed, they do a fair job. I will be staying put today and tomorrow. I'm waiting for our new bed to be delivered this afternoon anyway. Very exciting! Yesterday I went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond and got all new bedding and pillows. Can't wait! I have to go sweep out the dust bunnies before they arrive. They're taking the old bed away, too -- yay! I don't envy being a delivery person in this heat, though (especially since we're on the third floor). I will tip well.

I just bought a 10000 BTU window AC unit for $50 from a co-worker who had upgraded. Gonna plonk that baby in the back window of the bedroom room and crank it to 11.

A Mid-State Fair with highs in the 90s is pleasant. I volunteered up there one year, and it peaked in the 100s. It was supposed to be an interactive kids event, and the day started out nicely enough. But by noon, no one really wanted to do much, kids included.

Our high today will be around 67 degrees. We all have our fingers crossed that we'll see 78 this weekend -- for 3rd time this summer that temp has gotten that high.

I'm getting tired of this summer which is mostly a balmy spring.

gah. Now it's "94, feels like 101." Yup. I might make a trip to the convenience store and pick up a Windex-blue slushie for dinner.

Fun fact: Here's a dew point calculator.

It was hot enough this morning watering the plants on my porch that I left the A/C on low for my cat - I never do that, but today and tomorrow are supposed to be in the low and high 90s respectively.

Supposedly 93ºF in my Boston suburb right now. I'm more concerned about tonight's forecast of 80ºF at midnight and tomorrow's forecast high of 99ºF.

PS: WeatherUnderground is such a time sink for me. So many interesting numbers!

It was 97 F here today (Brooklyn, NY). Right now at 7:45 PM it's still 93. Tomorrow will be at least 100 F not counting the heat index. And I love it. I plan on spending as much time outside tomorrow as possible. Maybe spend a bunch of time at Coney Island. Yay!

Just got home. Water condensing inside my room on the air conditioner.

That's right, it's so humid that my air conditioner is crying.

It has been near or above 100 every day for the last couple of weeks (with a few pleasant 95s thrown in here and there). Aside from trying to keep plants watered, I am fine with it. I would prefer it was in the upper 70s, sure, but I would take 3 months of this over 3 weeks of the shit we have been getting in winter the last few years.
9pm, 91* w heat index of 101* in Raleigh. Also, LOL @ jouke

It "only" actually got up to 93 today so four degrees below the forecast but still beastly hot.

The bedroom is quite nice now with the AC unit blasting away. I'm sure that our power meter is spinning away too but we'll only use it for a few days.

What we really need is to hear from some of the Buns Down Under where it's wintertime...

The rain drums against the rooftiles in a cold patter echoed by the tiny kitty feet as the damp cat (damn cat?) hustles in after her early morning yard survey. She meowls at me plaintively in passing and then attempts to snuggle up to The Husband who has the flu and is buried under several piles of doona, blanket and dressing gown. These, combined with a fever, make him the warmest thing in the house and he is therefore a cat magnet. I stay in the kitchen with the simmering vat of chicken soup, a cup of tea and a good book and enjoy a cat-free croissant.

The rain makes the house damp and clammy but it's still a few degrees warmer than last week when the clear night skies let all the stored heat of the day radiate away into the black of space. There was frost and several days of getting ice off my windscreen - the little crystals of ice glittered in the weak dawn light just like the stars did the night before. I could see my breath as I huffed and puffed and poured warm water over the car. Now, I can still see my breath, but only as condensation on the inside of the windows. There's no point wiping it away - it's just as misty outside and the street-lights are on at midday.

Toronto is melting? OMG!!

I'm actually feeling very guilty because I've been in Calgary since Tuesday. I packed all my light clothes because I thought the heat wave was supposed to hit here, too, but coming into the city from my flight there was a small thunderstorm, then a huge thunderstorm later in the evening. We've had cool mornings in the teens and highs in the low twenties (low 60s to low 70s F), and tomorrow's high is supposed to be 12 (about 54 degrees F). So this eastern bastard will be freezing in the shade for another couple of days. There will still be some hot weather left for me when I get back to Toronto this weekend, though.

But really, Toronto weather is scary. I checked the weather in a break in class this afternoon and found that it was supposed to feel like 50 around 2 PM (that's 122 F, y'all). Unfuckingbelievable.

ninazer0, you must live in Melbourne ;-)

Up here in sunny Queensland, it's still pretty cool, relatively. Days have been in the 18-22 or so range, but nights at my place (well away from the heat sink effect of the ocean) it's been in the low single-digits most nights. In short, we're freezing our arses off here and I can't wait 'til Spring comes. Then we can start complaining about the heat ...

Outside Sydney, actually, dg. Melbourne can have its weather back as far as I'm concerned. The forecast to Tuesday is 5C-17C with rain which is just fucking excellent because the last time I saw the actual sun was Monday morning. I'm growing moss. I am actually reading all the stories about the heat and getting a little bit wistful.

It's very rare to hit 100F in Maine, but yesterday it was up to 102F. High humidity, too. I usually hate AC and don't have it at home, but with lots of fans it was an okay night. Popsicles, ice, and lots of water. Stay cool, y'all.
posted by theora55 23 July | 13:01
theora55, yesterday was the day that almost broke me, when I looked up the weather in Houston (my childhood home) and discovered IT WAS HOTTER HERE.

But I splashed about in a cool shallow bath, actually feeling the heat leave my body in waves as the water warmed up. I ate Italian ice and ice-cold cucumber slices and not much else --- sweltering heat makes food pretty unappealing. I drank liters of ice water and several glasses of lemonade. And I thought about snow.

After midnight, it cooled down in here. Last night was my first full night's sleep in over a week.
