30 June 2011

My boss used the P-word today [More:] During my mid-year review, my boss mentioned the word promotion. He said he's going to do what he can to get me bumped up to the next level.

On the one hand, this is certainly overdue; I haven't had a promotion in years.

On the other hand, I kind of like what I do and I'm not sure I want to upset the apple cart by raising the bar.

All in all, though, even if the promotion doesn't come through, it's nice to hear it from the boss.

(I have to post this here, because I don't want my wife to find out until it is a done deal. It will be a nice surprise if it comes through.)
Oh is there potentially also a Pay rise?

Hoping for the best matey!

Yippie!!! Drinks are on Doohickie. I mean that literally [flings iced tea]. I'm crossing my fingers for you, when I'm not busy getting drinks on you.

Hey, congrats! Instead of trying to decide whether you do or don't want a promotion, I would invite you to think about it an even larger way. This means that you are in an excellent position to negotiate. You say you like what you do; is there some combination of what you now do, and what you COULD do, that you would really love and want? Is there a reconfiguring of job responsibilities that would give you all your favorite parts of a new job while keeping some of your favorites from the old job? Also, don't forget that when you are being promoted and given a raise, you can also bring up time off as a compensation too. I personally would easily trade $2000 in in raise for another week of vacation, though not everyone would. But if you've been longing for flex time, different length workdays or weeks, or a different time off structure, now's your time!

Congratulations! I hear you: it's great to hear your boss acknowledge your value, no matter what happens. That's so exciting, Doohickie!

Buy yourself something fun.

On the other hand, I kind of like what I do and I'm not sure I want to upset the apple cart by raising the bar.

It's funny how "I just got promoted and I'm worried about the new responsibilities" is one of the complaints LEAST likely to get a sympathetic ear. Right up there with, "I just won a big award my first time trying something, and now I'm worried about a sophomore slump."

Congrats and good luck.

It will probably be several months before I hear anything, by the way. I work for kind of a big company, and there are lots of traps to run to get someone promoted. My boss mentioned it because there are some things I can do that will help my case... such as updating my bio on the company website to make sure it's current and dresses up what I've been doing so when others read it they go, "Wow, this guy really deserves a promotion!"
