Interested in extraordinarily complicated jury selections? How about patients' privacy rights (the jurors', no less) in a case involving a medicinal marijuana collective? The non-profit angle is a new one for California prosecutors (actually in ignorance of guidelines written by current governor Jerry Brown when he was Attorney General), and the potential for setting state precedents is high. Speculation on appeals will be meaningless until the case terminates one way or another. This has many earmarks of being a big one if you like to get in early on these types of things. If you haven't guessed, the defendant's war chest is brimming.
Yes, that's my local Sheriff's Department, the same one made famous last year for its Pedobear Warning (in its defense, they were re-distributing something they'd gotten from an even more idiotic law enforcement agency elsewhere, but got noticed first) and a couple years ago for an embarrassing raid "caught on tape". The December Medical Marijuana raids seemed to be the last shot by an outgoing sheriff; although the New Sheriff in Town, Ian Parkinson, remains suspect (like his campaign film showing him 'interviewed' by Lou Ferrigno - LOU FERRIGNO?!?), he has been doing visible outreach, 'reviving' an internal affairs position and making other noises like a reformer. We can only hope (until he's up for re-election in 3 1/2 years).

The cops here just busted a bunch of island dispensaries in unincorporated Fresno County using the 'non-profit' versus 'overhead' dodge. The thing is their own inventory of raided locations (including 2 warehouses) and confiscated materials indicates the immensity of the collectives' overhead. Also, I doubt they expected to find so little cash, about $400,000 between four independent collectives. That sounds like justifiable, daily-operations cash to me.
