Amazon's List of Well-Read Cities. Hey, a best-cities list that does *not* include Madison. Then I realized, in Madison they are more likely to beg, borrow or steal a book rather than buy it.
Hey, since we're talking about Amazon, can I just mention that the last time I ordered from them (which was May 16), I placed my order late Monday night and received both the books I ordered on Wednesday? And that it was free shipping too, because my order was over $25. Heavens, it can't be possible to improve on that.
The list is interesting. They've controlled for some of the factors too. I'd be interested in seeing a list that considers library use as well as book buying to get a really accurate, er, reading as to which Canadian cities are reading the most.
Not just Amazon. Musician's Friend also has free shipping, and I have had orders arrive just as quick. In all cases, UPS was the delivery agent. That company has some major log-fu going for them.
Last week I ordered a pair of shoes from Zappos and paid for two-day shipping so I could wear them this week (if they fit). Late that night, I got a message saying that they'd upgraded me to free overnight shipping, "just to perk up your day." The shoes arrived just after noon.
I'd like to think that my hometown of Gainesville is on the list legitimately, but I'm pretty sure it's only on there because 100,000 students at the U of F buy a lot of school-related books.
I was sad to see Seattle only 9th on the list. But not surprised we're there . . . this city is truly into reading and all the things that go with it, like coffee.
