The Metachat Children's Book of Fairy Tales. Or -- Let's self-publish a book. [More:]

Many places like Blurb print books on demand from uploaded pdf files. Blurb offers a 7" x 7" book with up to 40 4-color pages for $12.95 in softcover.

I would like to collect some illustrated fairy tales rewritten by Mecha peeps and compile them into a program like Blurb and make the book generally available. Original stories may be considered, but I think space constraints should limit us to familiar material.

I have not yet worked out the details of how many stories and at what length would fill 40 7" x 7" pages, but I figured that would be a part of the community process. As of now, I am picturing each story as 1 picture on the left page followed by 3 pages of text. Figure 600 to 700 words per story. Since each page can be 4-color, we may decide to do something more graphic and that could affect word counts.

We will need more than writers. We will need artists, photographers, font-designers, a story editor, an art editor, and anything else anyone wants to contribute. Blurb may not be our best option, so someone to do such research is also needed.

Today, I would like to gauge interest in such a project and offer early adopters the opportunity to choose which story they would like to write and/or illustrate. So, first come, first served. I ask that any professional writers give others the opportunity to choose first. Also, ideas for proceeding beyond this point are also welcome.

I would like to make this as open and community-oriented as possible, so stories and pictures will be available for others to critique and offer suggestions. Don't bring a hard nose to this, as when we get to the final layout, we may not be able to use everyone's contribution. The goal is to produce the best community book we can.
I think i may jump in.

I think this bunch could produce a kick-ass book of fairy tales appropriate for kids without downtalking them. Luckily, too, we have among us a few potential test parents and their kids.

This is a fascinating idea. I'm no writer, but I'd love to pitch in somehow, maybe as a proofreader or something like that.

Cool! I have some "dark fairy tale" appropriate photos I could contribute, plus editing skillz.

Okay, I'm claiming "Cinderella".

Super cool idea, but I've really got none of the skills you mention, I'm afraid.

So you want us to rewrite a fairy tale in our words?

Once upon a time there lived a very evil witch who only ate naughty children. She was very fat from all of the naughty children she had eaten, because once her evil mind had fastened on a particularly naughty boy or girl, there was simply no escaping her.

I hear she moved down the street last week.
Don't underestimate your skills, richat. The title page/contents and the credits page eat 2 pages already. Filling 3 or 4 little pages with text is almost too easy to do. If we need more illustrations, we can plunder what is already available online.

Also, someone will have to transform this into a pdf file.

My illustration skills are probably about on par with the reader age group this might be aimed at, but if that's ok, then I'd like to do an illustration.

Oo or font designing!?
posted by aniola 10 May | 12:17
Of course, font designing. I imagine we will need at least two different fonts, and three sizes of one of those fonts. Of course, the first letter of each story absolutely must stand out like a sore thumb.

Color design--is that a thing?--for the background of each page. We're paying for 4-color anyway, so why not make one page light blue, the next light pink, etc? This is your opportunity to help construct the perfect story book to pass down to your kids, and your kids' kids.

Who wants to do Peter Cottontail?

I would be very in for writing/illustrating a story, though my mind is too mushy (from other writing and getting over being sick) at the moment to decide on a good one from among the possibilities. Maybe something mythy.

Once upon a time there lived a very evil rabbit named Peter Cottontail, who only ate naughty children. He was very fat from all of the naughty children he had eaten, because once his evil, giant teeth had fastened on a particularly naughty boy or girl, there was simply no escaping him. He was like a pit bull with floppy ears.

I hear he moved down the street last week.
I can do the desktop publishing/InDesign thing.

(if it's not too fancy)

Yay!

I don't think this will get much fancier than what can be converted into a pdf file.

I don't know if I'm ready to write it, but have long though about what would have happened if Dorothy went down the orange brick road instead of the yellow one (they start as a spiral in the town square). Maybe someone could run with that?

Also, I can draw camels.

Oh, hedgehogs too.

I might could write something. Does it have to be an already existing fairy tale?

Thanks to all of you who responded. I was hoping for a bigger response, but that's ok. I am going to backburner this idea for now. If anyone wants to collaborate on such a self-written book (that will probably be handbound and limited to a half dozen copies or so--basically an heirloom book), drop me an email.

Oh! I didn't see this until today! I would really like to participate. I can write!
