Weekend 3-point update [More:]
1. The London Pet Show yesterday was fabulous! I saw both bunny and cat showjumping. The bunny showjumping was excellent - competitive and exciting, an international competition between Sweden and the UK. The British bunnies did not quite enter into the spirit of things because if they didn't like the fence, instead of jumping it, they'd just knock it over and walk through the stanchions. The cat showjumping was, as anyone who's ever owned a cat could tell you, a total failure. There were lots of animals on show, and the owners were very cool about letting people pet them.

2. For the second time in a week I've had a violent gastric upset in the middle of the night. I have a horrible feeling it's caused by some really delicious sheep's milk cheese I bought at the farmer's market last week because that was the common denominator in both upsets.

3. I am loving my new Prius. Love-love-love that car.

3a. Come on your Reds. (Man Utd vs Chelsea today, which may well decide who wins the Premiership.)
Sorry about the GI distress, Senyar. Those Corgi's are so cute. I wanted to comment but somehow I deleted my entire Flickr account a few weeks ago when I was clearing my cookies.

1. Yesterday I took the kids to the dentist. My big kid has never had a cavity. My little kid has another cavity (2nd or 3rd one). He loves candy and he is a teeth grinder (common for little kids, they outgrow it). I am the negligent mother that doesn't make him brush his teeth after he eats candy or eats three Popsicles in a row. Sugar consumption will have to lessen considerably.

2. Last night my sister and I went shopping. I found two tops -- both a pretty bright coral-red. I also bought a big bottle of delicious smelling shampoo and a tube of mascara.

3. I'm about to leave to go kayaking with my parents and my sister and her family. We go almost every weekend. I vow to row a lot today to burn off the Nutty Buddy ice cream cone I ate last night.

Happy Mother's Day to all of the Metachat mothers!

1. I haven't done anything with people this weekend--I've been catching up on my to-do list.
2. I have applied for another job, since I'm in the market now, and I'm really excited about this one. Hoping that a) i get it and b) they allow me not to relocate. Meanwhile, I keep looking for the next gig.
3. Glad to see it's clearing up outside; it rained last night, which threatened to put a major kibosh on my plans for gardening today.

1. I have successfully bought, transported, and distributed 320 pounds of dirt. Now I need to plant things in it.

2. I also need to buy, transport, and distribute probably about half that much mulch. But that might wait until next weekend.

3. Got my first blackfly bite of the year. Happy Spring.

1. I'm currently in North Carolina. It's insanely lovely down here. I'm staying with my soon-to-be in-laws. They're so friendly and lovely. All the neighbours made cakes for our arrival, and it's just like all those books set in small-town America that I've read. I really love it here.
2. I had a great time in NYC, ate SO much food and walked so much my feet are killing me. I also spent a small fortune on some very badly needed clothing. The best part, though, was getting to meet so many of the NYC peeps. So awesome to hang out with them all in person - kind of a surreal feeling hanging out with people I know, and realising this is the first time we've been in the same place. I'm meeting up with Stew on tuesday, and I'm very excited about that too.
3. Did I mention how lovely my in-laws are? I'm pretty damn lucky.

1. Holy christ do I have a lot of work. Seriously, "no end in sight" type work. We've never been so busy.

2. Despite that, because it is Sunday, we are going to spend some time this afternoon with some friends who have a newborn. I love baby cuddling like some people like cake.

3. Did I mention how much freaking work I have?

4. How did Stewriffic manage to secure a meetup with jonathanstrange and I wasn't invited? *sniff* I probably couldn't do it anyway, BECAUSE I HAVE SO MUCH FREAKING WORK.

1. Had what was likely an anxiety attack last night over this grade clusterfuck that may lead to me being kicked out of my program but I will fucking appeal all the way up to the school dean if I have to because if I go out, it will be kicking and screaming. Won't know anything until Monday. *fingers crossed for okayness*

2. Not looking forward to Mother's Day dinner this afternoon. I can almost guarantee that my mother is going to try and be fighty about something (I'm guessing it'll be another necklace affair or other comments about my 'slovenly' appearance) because she just can't fucking help herself.

3. Cranky cranky cranky. I just have to make it through the month and then I have 2 weeks off work. And I'm hoping that will help with the crankiness, but I doubt it because every time the phone even rings with one of their ringtones, I just get pissed off.

1. Idly wondering why mothers' day falls on different days in the US and UK

2. msali, I too have a freakish workload at the moment. workworkwork

3. Unusual amount of socializing this weekend and I want to hibernate for a while. Good thing I work on my own!

Altolinguistic, what the hell is happening in the translation industry? I've been busy before, but I have NEVER seen anything like the past few months. I am utterly swamped. Normally (and this has been the way it has been for ten-odd years), I am scheduled out MAX - two weeks. Right now I am scheduled out for months, and literally no end in site. And it's not just one client, its multiple clients that have heaps of work. I'm grateful to be so busy, but I don't know how much longer I can keep up working seven days a week.

alto, in the UK we celebrate Mothering Sunday, which is linked to the Christian calendar, being the fourth Sunday in Lent.

1. Trellises are up. Beans are planted. WALL OF OKRA has been sown. Entire body very sore.
2. Wicked sunburn on back of shoulders. Made it difficult to sleep last night. Why did I forget the sunblock? Why??
3. More work to do today. :(

1) I am outrageously happy about the news about Saedy.

2) I am taking great pleasure in root beer floats.

3) At the vet's yesterday, she spotted the book I was reading and we chatted some about that author, similar authors, and mystery books. And then she told me about a huge, cheap book sale and told me when and where. I know where I'm going to be next Saturday.
posted by galadriel 08 May | 13:50
1. Very happy about Saedy too.

2. We're in Palm Desert on vacation. I'm playing lizard and soaking up rays. Ahhh. Nice switch from Seattle, where it has been unseasonably cold. Enjoying the corny old Hollywood vibe here, too. And went nuts at a street fair with Bear yesterday, acquiring glittery sandals, a cleverly designed travel purse with a zillion pockets, and some very pretty jewelry.

3. Ran 7 miles this AM, arranging to run UP hill for the first half so the return was all DOWN (well, mostly.) Bay to Breakers 12K is next Sunday, so this is my last long run until then. It won't be fast, but I feel fine about making the finish line.

1 Finished planting the new rose garden yesterday. I'm hoping for a moderate spring so they get established well. Most of the perennials from last year are coming back gangbusters

2 Mothers day went to see mom, had a nice brunch.

3 Got a new teevee today. We don't have cable so it's for whatever we get over the air, the hdmi input, and movies. Small at 32 inches, but plenty big for this house, plus it's a nice edge-lit LCD. Looks awesome.

msali - if you're around, it's on Tuesday evening... come along!

1. Called my mom, she doesn't quite remember who I am due to her memory/dementia issues but she's such a born politician that she fakes it well. It must be exhausting for her to constantly have to rebuild reality on a minute-by-minute basis. She's living in a home about five minutes from my sister and my other sister was up for a visit this weekend. Mom doesn't do well with crowds so I'll wait until another weekend to see her.

2. Just did a 12 mile run along the rivers this afternoon, came home, took a shower and promptly passed out cold for two hours until hunger woke me up. One week until the marathon and at least I proved to myself that I can run the 1/2 (slowly). I'm hoping for 2 hours and 10 minutes for the 13.1.

3. I have to report to the Court of Common Pleas at 8:30 tomorrow morning for jury duty. Fun.

1. Came home yesterday to a surprise Mother's Day gift: my HandyMan was mulching and planting impatiens around my house (eldest son was assisting. Second son was cleaning their bathroom). It looks lovely, especially after all the work HandyMan and I did around the yard last weekend.

2. Today is also my mother's birthday, so I invited her, my brother, and his wife to dine with us, celebrate quietly (my sis-in-law lost her mom to cancer in December; this is her first Mothers Day without her), and just enjoy each other.

3. Due to #2, I super-cleaned my house this morning. All the things I've been putting off- like a really good scrubbing-mop, not just a little quick clean. I love it; my house looks great..now if I can just keep it this way. Which reminds me..I have laundry to fold.

1. I had a very nice weekend. Friday I went to the opera (Rigoletto) with bf and his class of freshman. It was interesting but too long for my taste (3 acts and long intermissions inbetween each). Afterwards we were really hungry and went out to Mexican and ate too much too fast and then felt terrible on the trip home.

2. Saturday I went to a picnic in the park and brought Senator and met some new people. Sen met my friend's 1.5 yr old son for the first time and they were wary of each other but ended up liking each other. It was cute to watch, esp bc the boy doesn't have great motor control yet so his attempts at petting the bunny were also experiments in staying upright.
Then bf and I cooked dinner for his brother and his gf which was fun. We made recipes that we learned in the Indonesian cooking class. We made tofu and sweet curry sauce, greens with fresh coconut and spice paste, and vegetables and seitan with spicy peanut sauce. There were a lot of sauces and it was very involved but it all came out well and we were pleased.

3. Today I had brunch with a friend which we quickly realized was a dumb idea since everywhere was overrun with brunching mothers and children. So we went to the park. Then I saw a bunch of friends including TPS and had a nice time at a barbecue.

1. We have this really petty woman at our church who hates everything and everyone. Her new means of protest is to refuse to take communion while assisting at the altar (she pretends to take it- she puts the host in her pocket and just presses her lip to the chalice. I could tell from behind she was faking). She's done this before; the first she did it, it really shook our pastor up. I checked in with him today to make sure he was OK and he said he was over it, that every church has a person like that and he's decided to just ignore it, which I agree is best. She'll tire of her antics once she realizes nobody cares but her.

2. Visited a friend in the hospital today and then went to a BBQ with some fine folks (like rmless, yay!). Schlepped around all day in new shoes, and they lasted OK- only really hurt once I was almost home.

3. No Accounting class tomorrow- I'm done for the semester, turned in the take-home final on Friday. It'll be weird to come straight home on a Monday and have a whole evening free!

1. So nervous about my first zumba class tomorrow. I very much lack hand/eye coordination, plus I have a herniated disc and my friend the physical therapist thinks I'm an idiot for doing this and I'm going to aggravate it.

2. So nervous for the start of a trial on Tuesday. I will be spending most of tomorrow preparing, falling further behind on all my other work.

3. My parents are away on vacation, so no Mother's Day dinner. They will also be away for Father's Day and my birthday. Ah well.

1. I have a sinus infection and no insurance. I get sinus infections like once a year, and I'm just hoping that this time it doesn't turn into bronchitis, because I have to take a solo road trip from TX to NY and back in two weeks. Mostly, though, I'm just unhappy because being sick turns me into a huge whiny baby. I'm self-aware enough to know I'm being a huge whiny baby, but I feel too bad and run-down to exert the willpower necessary to stop being a huge whiny baby.

2. Last fall when we moved into this house I planted some mums in the front garden. I thought they died from under-watering, but I went outside the other day and noticed they are budding. I didn't kill my flowers through neglect! Hooray!

3. I still haven't sat down to watch Game of Thrones, so I'm thinking of watching all four episodes thus far in an epic "I'm sick and can't move off the armchair" session later today. Actually, given I lack the attention span to watch dramas most of the time - always get distracted and want to wander off, no matter HOW much I really do want to watch the thing - this sinus infection might be salvaged a bit by forcing me to be a captive audience.

TPS: refusing to take communion? What kind or grade school bs is that?

1. Busy week, hurray! My efforts to jumpstart myself out of a funk work, and I'm feeling pretty happy right now. It helps that we're having our monthly allotment of sun yesterday through Thursday. FIVE whole days of not-cloudy!

2. Reading the Narnia series. What an awesome set of books.

3. My little brothers are both graduating (one from high school, one from college) and I'm trying to figure out something nice for them. For the younger, it's easy: take him out for a day on the town. The older one is a bit difficult. Maybe take him and some friends to a brewery.
posted by punchtothehead 09 May | 07:16
Yeah punchtothehead- when TPS and I talked about the petty woman yesterday, I said that if she is playing a literal game of "holier than thou" she is really only screwing herself by not taking communion.
posted by rmless2 09 May | 08:48
I think she'll tire of skipping out, especially if nobody responds to her. If only she'd tire of being the Negative Nancy on council and step down from that, too, I'd jump for joy.
