28 April 2011

I wish this was chosen at random from the book of questions, but [More:]
It's from my actual life. My vacuum cleaner, which has disposable bags, was recently used to clean the house and contains lots of cat hair, mixed in with the carcasses of numerous dead water bugs, but now also contains an sd-card. In order to retrieve this card, I would have to inset my hand into the small hole in the disposable bag and feel around for it.
Would you do this?
Yes. Wearing vinyl gloves, I would do this. That's not nearly the grossest thing you could have come up with.

You could also dump the dreck out onto a sheet of newspaper so that you could actually see the card, rather than having to feel around for it. Do that outside, though.

What mudpuppie said, except instead of dumping it from the small hole, you could cut it open from the bottom to dump it. Also, ewwww.

I'd take it outside onto the driveway, lay it down flat, and cut a big X into it with a utility knife. Peel back the new triangular flaps and it should be easy to look through the contents without reaching in very far. When done, push the flaps closed again and put the whole business into a garbage bag.

I would dump it, like mudpuppie said, after deciding whether the cost of replacing it would be worth it to me. Is the sd card under $20? That might be my cutoff. Or is there anything on it that isn't saved elsewhere? Then I would definitely do it.

Done this several times, for some lost items.

I gloved up and slit the back of the bag, and it was not hard to find said items.

You are inhaling less dander, that way. Dumping it would release a big cloud of cooties, I would think.

Wear rubber gloves and cut a hole in the bag, dumping it into a large garbage bag laying on its side for better access while keeping maximum containment. And/or use my tool of choice, the Pikstik, a device like the Gopher Grabber but better quality for reaching and grabbing small items from a safe distance. Bought a package of 2 at Costco for $20 (because they don't sell a single anything at that price). I had given the second to my father, but now I have two again. Would you like one?

Hmmmm. I guess I would have no problem rummaging around in the stuff bare handed as long as it was all dry and didn't contain anything sharp that might cut me. I'd take it outside and dump it on some newspapers and have at it, as long as it wasn't too windy. Wash your hands or take a shower afterwards... It's just stuff, not nuclear waste.

I must admit I wouldn't, unless there were something unique that I wanted on the SD card. If there were, I'd use the mudpuppie method, i.e. newspapers, outside, rubber gloves.

I would definitely do it. With my bare hands. Cut it open and dump like others have said. The X-method sounds great.

I'd use danf's procedure.

But: sd card's are that inexpensive now? Wow. Mine are at least a couple years old and cost a lot more than that.

It's dead bugs, not biohazard, so I'd take it outside and open it. And then take a long shower.

You are walking around in this stuff every day anyway, so what's the real problem here? Granted, it's a bit more concentrated than usual...

As others have mentioned, cut it open and go for it. I'd lay a garbage bag out (kind of 'puddle' the garbage bag so that you can just grab the sides when you are done and the whole thing will end up inside the bag) as far away from the house as possible, then cut the bag open and poke around with a screwdriver or something - it should be pretty easy to find. That shit flies around everywhere if there is any wind, thhough, so do it when/where it's calm.

Turns out there was no sd card in there (after I went through it!) The vacuumer, when asked to confirm it happened says, "I'm not sure."
