The Portal 2 Spioler Thread - EVERYTHING AFTER THIS IS A SPOILER Space space spaaaaaaace.
So I think it's well supported that:

Chell was at least the daughter of an Aperture Labs person cause she has a science fair experiment display in the Take Your Daughter To Work Day event.

Caroline not only got brain-copied but is a part of GLaDOS

The Turrets have created their own society outside of everyone else. One with classical music and knowing "her name is Caroline."

Rattman forced the system to make Chell the first test subject.

MY THOUGHTS:

Chell is the daughter of Cave and Caroline.

But she given up for adoption and ended up with another Aperture employee

She was a volunteer test subject.

She was Not To Be Tested but Rattman intervened.

When she comes out, it's a few hundred years after Half Life 2.

The Borealis is the key to stopping the Combine and it vanished from Aperture sometime before Half Life 1.

Rattman may have had a hand in making the turrets aware and they've gotten personality from the various pre-recorded announcements.

Caroline did not upload her mind voluntarily, and this created GLaDOS.

and the Turrets regard you and wheatley and Glados like we would regard Gods, so they sing an opera at the end and try to help you out.

Chell is the protagonist, GLaDOS/Wheatley is the antagonist and the Turrets are the audience.

Counterpoints (because I'm contrary like that):

I'm not sure it's been a few hundred years - I mean, yes, plants & the rust, but some of those potatoes don't look all that old and really, nobody's looked at a Michigan salt mine for hundreds of years, and the radios still have working batteries? I think there's some truth-stretching going on.

I really wanted there to be more to the Borealis dock than a locked gate & some life preservers - but we won't know because Ep3 is *never* coming out.

Her being Cave & Caroline's daughter explains having one person in the database matching her last name, but not two (unless they married after the fact, but that's pushing it.)

I'm thinking Caroline was added to GladDOS as a mitigating factor like the personality cores (oh right, that's not a counterpoint.)

I personally like the theory that GlaDOS deleting Caroline failed, and your 'escape' at the end is Caroline overriding her to set you free.

I think yes, GLaDOS did TRY to delete Caroline, cause she found where Caroline lives in her brain, and she deleted it, but it still hangs around.

She Chell goes to the MOON, you see a Not Horribly Terraformed Planet and you land in a Golden Field, I think whenever Chell arrives, it's long after Half Life and the Combine. Cause they failed in terrforming.

Hundred or so maybe. SOME TIME AFTER, I think so.

and the idea that if that is true it means Portal 1 and 2 is all about a fucked up Mother-Daughter relationship and I prefer that interpretation so there. It's like Mommy Dearest with robots and goo.

And space.

I guess I mostly felt let down by the brief here's-the-aperture-history-tour bits, as I wanted them to be longer and have more Cave Johnson. But I like the whole Chell-as-GlaDOS/Caroline's daughter idea, and could have done with less Wheatley to accomplish it better (not that I don't love me some Steven Merchant dialogue.)

I figured it was post-Combine since the Borealis was gone but GlaDOS still saw humans outside (or claimed to.)

Humanity is a lie!

All I know is that for the past few days, elizard and I have been walking around muttering, "Space. We're in space. SPPPAAAAAAAAAAACE!"

I've yet to find the Borealis, Rattman's lair, or the hidden companion cube in the co-op hub.

Also: I am somewhat enamored with the term "edgeless safety cube".

Adventure sphere is a dick!

No love for fact sphere? Fact sphere is a good sphere with many friends.

I never managed to finish Portal 1. I got stuck on one of the levels, got bored and never went back.

Same as octothorpe, only my son easily beat the level at which I was stuck and now beats me at everything!

Oh, I don't try to compete with my son in computer games. He's spent way too many sleepless nights at LAN parties honing his skills.

Quoth Fact Sphere:

"Edmund Hillary was the first man to climb Mt. Everest. He did it accidentally, while chasing a bird."

LOL

theory that all the bird references in the game relate to a bigger Prometheus theme.

It actually holds together better then most theories.
