How many T-shirts do you own? I'm talking your basic, casual crew-neck, got it for free at at the 5k or family reunion T-shirt. I'm in the process of cleaning out my closet for spring [More:] I seem to have about a dozen, I know I don't need so many since I rarely ever wear them (used to wear them to the gym, but now I go to a place on my lunch hour that provides clothes), but I can't seem to part with any of them. The high school shirt, the family reunion for my grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary (which was 10 years ago!), the shirt I "earned" when I was the first student in college to rack up 500 miles of cardio and join the "500 Mile Club". It's amazing the way we can hold onto things!
I have 6 that I use for workouts, and then maybe 10-12 that get worn in the summertime. The oldest (really only suitable for exercise now) is my Virginia Commonwealth University t-shirt, bought in 1987.

Too many.

I have two tiers - workout-only, and "nice" (for a t-shirt). The "nice" ones tend to have a graphic from an event I was involved with, and they are a color instead of white. I consider those more actual clothes, like weekend clothes, and don't wear them to the gym..unless and until they get pretty threadbare, of course.

Way, way too many. I have a lifetime supply of race shirts (in fact, one of my self-contests is to see how much race paraphernalia I can wear at once,) but I try to keep those reserved for actually running or working out.

So, those, plus ten older t-shirts, mostly stolen from brothers, my pop, and ex-boyfriends. And then my "nicer" t-shirts - mostly J. Crew v-necks. Maybe ten of those, too.

I keep meaning to throw out half the race shirts and old t-shirts, but man, I can't toss the shirt my dad was wearing when I was born. Or the one that France Harris signed, but that we washed so much that it's been erased. Or the shirt I wore on the best day of my life. I'm probably being too sentimental, but - well, they're just shirts. They don't take up that much space (or wouldn't, if I had fewer...)

I have way too many - the oldest one that I still have is one from 1986 or so. That tells you how much sizing has changed - I was tall and very, very thin on the varsity swimming team when I bought it and it still fits me now (note: 2 inches shorter and about 75 heavier). I donated a bunch of them when we moved from Madison to Portland, and now as I am getting rid of them, I cut them up for dust rags.

I've started getting new ones from places I really like to support them. I mostly wear them around the house or for exercise.

Way WAY too many.

I have basically three styles of shirt I actually wear: polo shirts with pockets, t-shirts with pockets and graphic t-shirts, most either from Shirt.Woot! or Topatoco (t-shirt printer for the coolest webcomickers). Each category I have more than 15 of (and I think over 20 of the pocket t's, most Hanes Beefy T's in my XtremelyXL size, but a few light weight ones for the really hot days in Californium).

Yes, I have the MetaFilter T-shirt, and TWO of the almost-forgotten MonkeyFilter T (the 'USBanana' design). My other favorite printed T's include two I have personally pleaded with creator Jon Rosenberg to put back into print: one with his talking veggie character Brock Stalkley that says "I'm Considered Extremely Macho By Broccoli Standards" and one with a picture of a Munchkin With Attitude holding a lollypop and wearing a big bling-thing saying "REPRESENT" (get it, The Lollypop Guild Represents? Well, I LIKE IT). From R.Stevens I have a black shirt with the design of his bumper sticker: "HOW'S MY BLOGGING? CALL 1-888-STFU_LOL" that I enjoy wearing in public. My favorite Woot! T is its 'Red Radio' design with a big old-fashioned microphone. Sadly, my totally geeky "Mr. Spork" shirt was torn and had to be tossed. And I have at least 5 that I don't want to be caught wearing that I got in "random t-shirt" sales from one place or another. But if I don't intend to make a spectacle of myself, I go for a shirt with a pocket that I can keep my phone and rescue inhaler in.

But in 1976, when I was breaking into radio via getting involved with the crazy L.A. disc jockey Dick Whittington, there was one running joke about "putting Wendell on hold" that became such a local meme that some crazy guy made t-shirts using a b&w pic of me with a phone to my ear and the legend: "KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL. KEEP WENDELL ON HOLD." I have one in safe storage in my size and this week while going through my late father's belongings (an emotionally exhausting process), I found HIS copy of the shirt in his dresser. No proof he ever wore it in public, but still kept very accessible. And he always told me my radio adventures as Wendell were silly.

I have as many t-shirts as I do silk Hawaiian shirts.

Which is to say ... too many of both.

However, post-surgery, I've lost enough weight that I can wear this shirt and feel slightly sexy (unlike the guy wearing it in the photo shoot who is fucking sexy).

I also forgot to mention I own an authentic replica of Jayne's "Fighting Elves" t-shirt from Firefly. It's my absolute favorite t-shirt. I wear it out in public and no one comments. DOES NO ONE LOVE FIREFLY? Sheesh.

I have four - one MetaFilter and three Threadless; I just got those this/last year. I discovered v-necks were much more flattering so I got rid of the regular t-shirts. I tossed or donated most of them and the mister snagged a couple of my old work-out t-shirts that were in good shape.

The mister must have 30 or more. He used to have more, a lot more, but finally got rid of those that he definitely was never going to wear again (worn out, out grown, etc.).

Too many to count. Including NYC Marathon, talk.bizarre, I [+] MetaFilter, Flying Toasters, Ask Dr. Lovelady, Wigstock. That's just those I remember at the moment.

Too many....to the point that I'm thinking about sending a bunch off to the place I saw advertised in Rolling Stone that makes quilts out of them.

Too many to count. Mostly plain colors sometimes with a pocket. If it was up to me, I'd wear one every day. Long sleeve ones with the three buttons at top during the winter.

Actually, it is up to me, and I wear one just about ever day except when I'm giving a workshop and then I wear nice clothes and a tie. Sometimes a suit depending on whom I'm presenting to and how many. If I go out with friends or to a party I'll wear a button up shirt.

That was a bit more than you asked for. That's the first time I've written down my fashion manifesto. Actually, if I had more money, I'd wear a suit a lot more often. I like the way it makes me feel.

It would be easier to recount the many I use to have, signed concert t-shirts that my mother threw out because they were "dirty."

I only have one crewneck teeshirt with a logo on it that I got for free from upcoming.org ages ago. I wear it on weekends when I don't shower and am doing a lot of cleaning. Like today. I also own one logo-less, solid-green crewneck tshirt that's stretchy that I may wear under a sweater at work on casual Fridays. But I have about 4 spaghetti strap camis that I wear more often.

I have maybe five that I have kept. I usually throw my event/race/freebie baseball game shirts away after a year or so. I usually wear them while cleaning and they get bleach splatters or get ruined somehow. My kid and I ran a 5K in February and that shirt is black mesh. It will last longer than white cotton that I would clean in.

This is pretty neat. I'm curious, what do the clothes look like?

My favorite color, gray! They offer crew-neck t-shirts, elastic waist shorts, and long scrub-like pants in a variety of sizes. Oh, and white athletic socks.

That is so cool. How convenient.

Two drawers full. . .that's all I know. And I get rid of the old ones, as the new ones arrive and I can't fit them all in.

well over 30.
posted by jonmc 17 April | 11:32
Maybe 40 or so? About 2/3 are 'event' shirts that I can't bear to throw out.

Also, T-shirts should never, ever have pockets.

I have 3, all with paint stains on them. My SO has or rather, had upwards of 500 gimme-shirts and steadfastly refused to cull any of them until I started tossing them out 20 at a time.

Oh, tons. I love t-shirts. I can never have enough. Catholic school meant one kind, one color of blouse. Every damned day. The last month of high school the seniors were allowed "free dress" - no tshirts, but no ****** uniforms. I took all my uniform shirts, got every color of Rit dye in the store, and had a different colored shirt for every day of that last month.

I've been in t-shirts for the most part ever since. What I love is going to the imperfect bin and getting 15-25 shirts of all sizes. The kids and I go nuts with dye and fabric markers and fabric pastels.

In fact, this weekend I had a full load of tie dye and home-made shirts. They all got washed separately together. :)
