Have Any Cutting-Your-Own-Hair-with-Clippers Tips? Shallow, self-indulgent hair details:[More:]
So I buzzed all my hair off at the end of last summer and have been maintaining it at about clipper #1, like 3mm or so, ever since. I want to grow it in a bit; still buzzed on sides and back but a bit longer on top so I can sort of smooth it down or have it kind of messy or chunky or whatever.
My options are limited as my hair is thinner on top and is majorly receding with a sort of "peninsula" in the middle, so I can't have it too long or it looks creepy. Right now I've grown it out to that hideous in-between length of about 1/2". It's too short to flatten it down so it's sort sticking up on the top but staying flat on the sides and I'm hiding under a hat.
My question is, should I buzz the sides and back now to help it grow in or wait a bit 'til the top is longer? When I cut the sides and back, where should I stop? How do you do the whole "blending" thing? Go from short-to-long attachments or long-to-short?
Go long to short attachments and use downward strokes from the top of your head down to your neck. Don't go "up" or sideways or you will ruin the blending and end up with stripey-head. If you need to go up on your neckline, that is ok.
The top of your head should be the longest and from the top of your ears down (all the way around) should be the shortest, with blending inbetween. But again, don't do the thing where you buzz from one ear around to the other or you could end up with something like a bowl-cut.

This sounds like a really bad idea.

I've never had the nerve to cut my own hair but then I only spend $10 every four months or so for hair cuts so there wouldn't be much savings.

Thanks for the tips, rmless2. Going in a downward direction makes sense, long to short.

I've been doing it for quite a while. It's easy when you're just buzzing your head evenly all over; a bit tricky if you want anything more complex.
I get my wife to help with the back in that situation.
