This is a "wining" thread... We just unearthed a bottle of "Two Buck Chuck," circa 2001.
Is it liable to be, as David Byrne might have put it, "same as it ever was?"
Are those corked or screw-top?

1) smell it
if it smells like wine
2) taste a tiny sip
if you don't gag

DRINK ALL THE WINE

It might taste like Two HUNDRED Buck Chuck after all the aging! Or it may be busted. I look forward to hearing the resolution.

If it is a cabernet or some other tannic red, there is a chance.

But yeah, open it and be very careful. It might be good vinegar also.

Funny. Definitely try it and drink it. The funny part is thinking that 2001 is old. MOST wines are designed to be consumed within 6 months of purchase. The amount of people that cellar wines is minuscule compared to the instant consumer, so wineries create their products to appeal to the masses. Wines don't need to be undrinkable young in order to be cellarable. My favorite variety, Pinot Noir, is great young, and if made right, can age gracefully as well as any tannic cabernet. I've also had 30 and 40 year old rieslings that were fantastic. Just last week I was in the PX in Salinas, Puerto Rico, and came across some 1996 Rioja for around 10 bucks a bottle. Very tasty, and I wish I had bought more.

The end result is that wine snobs are a dime a dozen. If you like it drink it. Fuck all the rest.
