The spider trees of Sindh: "An unexpected side-effect of the flooding in parts of Pakistan has been that millions of spiders climbed up into the trees to escape the flood waters."
I don't know why this seemed oddly Lovecraftian to me.

I was afraid to click, expecting to see the aforementioned millions of spiders. But no spiders. Just really beautiful trees.

Kind of freaked out by the girl walking under the tree. Imagining spiders dropping onto her....gah.

I'm with Miko. I realize they are generally harmless, and some are reputedly smart and affectionate (tarantulas) but I hate spiders completely. I've only evolved as a human being to the point of backing away and NOT begging my husband to kill them . . . I'm pretty sure that's as good as I can get.

Yay, spiders! (For killing the bugs that do us actual harm.)

That said, I totally get why some people are freaked out by them. They would seem to push a number of our buttons, evolutionarily speaking.

I am now imagining what's going on within those trees. It's a battle for space and real estate, spider versus spider. The youngsters duking it out with the veterans for the best locations for their webs. Punks racing across silken lines to pick off another spider's prey before they can get to it.

Wouldn't that make for an awesome new animated feature from Dreamworks?

Anyone?

Kinda cool sitting here thousands of miles away on a computer.

I don't hate spiders, they do good stuff, but most crawlies freak me out.

iconomy, thanks for the "no actual spiders" info.

Thanks BoringPostcards - this was fascinating. Would have loved some macros though!

I like spiders, but not that many in one place. I'm glad they're eating the mosquitoes, though.

I don't really dislike spiders, but I would be way skeeved out by a treeful of them.

I mean, I bet you can hear them.

Oh. Miko. Why. No. I. Awful.

I'm not generally afraid of spiders, but THAT. That made my ears itch.

Also, it's pretty funny in a horrible way. I hope you are crouched at your computer cackling. I am.

The thing is - if they are all in the trees they are nowhere near me.

What bearwife said. And Miko just gave me nightmare material.

why, o why did I come back into this thread? Hearing spiders would make more than my ears itch. The trees look cool, and I appreciate that spiders eat bugs, but I do not want to hear spiders or insects. Nope. nope. no, please, really, just NO.
