Reload Button? New Firefox. . .lack of apparent reload button. . .it is an option on one of the dropdowns, but I can't seem to get it anyway else. Am I just not seeing it?
I'm using 3.6.16 and I've got a blue circle-ish arrow to the left of the address bar. F5 should work too.

I "upgraded" to 4.0. . .it is very different. . .I might advise against upgrading. . .we'll see how I get used to it.

the reload button is there . it was on the far right side of the navigation bar . if its not there, right click on the navigation bar, click customize, then find it and drag it to where you want it

Hm. Mine said it updated this morning. Do you have to ask for 4.0 or did Firefox lie to me?
posted by youngergirl44 25 March | 11:17
Oh I see it. . .I could not find it to save my life. Youngergirl, you have to ask for it. My 3.xx upgraded also, and it also told me about the 4.0. So you need to actually download it.

Question: Would a FireFox 4.0 General Discussion tread be something y'all would like? I can post one. OR, perhaps, this thread might do.

I'd be interested in hearing more about it and here is fine, although I can't imaging I'd have a lot to contribute.

I installed in on my newest machine running Windows 7 and it's a bit to get used to. Whenever I need to refresh, though, I always hit Ctrl+F5, so I'm not worried about the lack of a visible reload button, per se.

One thing I do like is the ability to minimize tabs I always have open.

One thing I don't like is that I can't find the "button" for my Echofon pop-up list, even if it says it's compatible with 4.0.

Hmm, when I said "minimize tabs" I mean, "pinning" a tab to the far right in a smaller width that always opens whenever I start a new session.

Pinning tabs sounds interesting. Kinda like creating a custom start page?

One of my major apprehensions in upgrading is extension comparability. I've got my 3.x.x tweaked to perfection. I'd hate to loose any one of them.

(also, looks like we'll stick with this post for general discussion)

I'm happy so far.
I think it's great that they try to be parsimonious with screen real estate. I see a reload button on the right of the location.

So are your pinned tabs like the new version of reopening your last session, or is it more of a multiple home page option?
posted by youngergirl44 25 March | 13:24
Hmm. Not sure what you mean by multiple home page option. Since my Gmail Inbox was almost always me default home page, there's been no change for me.
posted by TrishaLynn 25 March | 13:39
Well, there wasn't really ever a multiple homepage option - I just made that up. But the "show my windows and tabs from last time" in the homepage settings sometimes doesn't work for me - especially if I have my main window with a bunch of tabs and a little popunder ad window and I close the ad window last. So I'm wondering if this new pinning thing is more reliable.

I read the 4.0 features page and it looks like there isn't much that is too too different. At least, my extensions take care of some of the changes already. Interesting, my tweaked browser uses less space at the top then the new one does.

I really don't like the idea of Tabs On Top. I suppose I'd get used to it. Does anyone know if there is an option to keep it the way it is in 3.x?

Regarding the Pinned Tabs, it looks like sites/web applications you frequently use don't have to be kept open in an existing tab. You can "Pin" a site like Gmail to the menu bar so it functions like a quick launch button.

I wonder what the thinking was, putting the reload button over there. I guess it has something to do with loading progress, so that makes it like not a first-rate control. Or maybe because it has merged with the "GO" button. Or maybe they just had to do something different so they wouldn't be too embarrassed standing next to Chrome.

Reload works in my installation (3.6.16), but the back button isn't behaving normally. On leaving a page the first time (opening the new one in the same tab), the button fails to light up, and I have to use the 'History' drop down to return. After that, any back action (keyboard or navigation bar) works. It didn't used to do this. Do I have to re-install the browser?

It's not really all that different than 3.whatever. More cosmetic than anything else to me, but I'm not a power browser. Pages don't seem to load any faster, and I'll probably never use "panorama" (although it's pretty).

Having the reload button relocated is a bit weird, that's true.

Still have the odd problem (that started about a year ago for no known reason) that when using Firefox and only Firefox and when trying to send e-mail attachments via gmail, it crashes my network card. Using any other browser to send attachments via gmail works fine. And using Firefox to send attachments via any other web-based e-mail also works fine. Weird.

Thanks Terapin, for the "how to."

WolfDaddy, I've yet to be able to send any email from FF. It just won't open my client, let alone attach things to the mail. Must be a common bug or something.

Oh, you're good.

Mine listed "always ask." It never did so I figured it was kerfunked. THANKS!
