If you were a music star, who would you be? [More:] Inspired my my story in the Friday Night question thread below, I must say I have always strangely identified with Michael Stipe. I'm not saying he's the best, or my all time favorite by any means, it's just, that's who I'd be.
Nanci Griffith, or Emmylou Harris. It's Emmylou's career I would want more, though - she's sung with everybody.

Part of ABBA. No contest.

Karen O. I can only aspire to be that cool.

Brian Eno. Harold Budd. Loscil. Cousin Silas. Aphex Twin. Somebody like that- a geek who builds droning soundscapes that last twenty minutes and hang on every little shift of texture. And very few people know what he looks like.

Aretha Franklin or Stevie Wonder is who I would want to be.

Well, I just finished watching "Some Kind of Monster" so i think I'd like to be Lars Ulrich so I could ponce around being an egotistical sanctimonious little prick all day. And be very rich doing it.

As a teenager in the early 70s, I did want to be Elton John, even though his sexuality was in question back then (but so was mine). Even now, he'd be on my list.

But my #1 choice? Weird Al. Obviously.

If I had a chance to be a rock star so I could help him/her live their life differently: Gerry Rafferty. No changes until about 1980, but after that, lots.

Who am I most like, or who do I want to be?

Most like? Probably someone witty and a bit cynical, funny and serious in the same breath. So maybe Sean Nelson from Harvey Danger? Though I don't know if I'm that scornful, so maybe Chris Ballew from PUSA (aka Caspar Babypants). Or someone in that vein (I could even see Thomas Dolby; I can identify with someone who could do both Hyperactive and Europa and the Pirate Twins).

Want to be? No one, really. Prince without the crazy is not Prince. Neil Young without the hardships is not Neil Young. But they're both pretty steadily awesome rockers with some integrity; been making music the way they want to for some time now. I mean, that's what I'd like in my life—the ability to follow my muse and entertain people in my own way. I don't need to be the biggest or the best, just need to do what I love.

Also, JanetLand: I heart you.

Hey, there's a line here, buddy!

Tonight, I'll go with John Doe. He got to live the life and make great music with X and has mellowed out but is still recording good stuff and seems really grateful to be doing so as his older self. Not a bad run there.

Well shit, Hugh's Big Bill Broonzy now.

I think if I woke up a music star tomorrow, I'd probably be Black Francis, but Jenny Toomey is my soul sister.

In my fantasies I'm a star pianist, for some reason. Like Paul Lewis.

Or Oscar Peterson.

Part of ABBA. No contest.

Geez, that sounds like SO MUCH FUN. But only if I were doing it with a friend. Can I join you, JanetLand?

On my own? ... maybe Elvis Costello.

Clearly an ABBA tribute karaoke meetup is in order.

I would like to be able to say I had written Famous Blue Raincoat, and to say that I'd been to bed with Janis Joplin, amongst others. But mostly for the songs.

When I was last in a band, I modeled myself on Toni Halliday, but I always got compared to Debbie Harry by audience members.
