Do we like video 3-point updates? I thought it was fun to do the 3-point update in video (or audio). There were not as much responses as I'd thought. [More:] So I'm wondering: what do you metachats think? Do we need more lead time? In the weekend instead during the work week? Obfuscation software to make your pimples, hangover, sweat pantaloons and dusty house less apparent?
I think this is a fun idea. I'm scatty and can't make any promises. I would love to see this, though. I will make my best effort to do it if it comes up.

our previous video update

Btw as a foreigner I'm non-plussed with the expression "I'm scatty". Does that mean you'll do a jazzy version of rapping your update? While signalling your gang affiliation by making initial signs with your hands?
For a provincial dutchman like me that sounds very typically american and picturesque! I'm looking forward to your video update!

I thought it was interesting, but I didn't really listen/watch anyone else's updates. :-/

scatty = disorganised (like me). Plus I think it's a great idea, but I want to keep up the illusion that I'm tall, slim and beautiful.

Just put some vaseline on the lens. Worked in the seventies/eighties.

I liked it very much. There seems to be a camera on my laptop, so I could try a video update next time. I'll definitely need the vaseline though, because I'm looking haggard these days.

I liked them! I think I was super busy that time, but I would be up for trying again :)

I'll be wearing a hessian sack over my head and will be speaking with the voice of John Hurt.
I'll be humming to myself you're marked to battle the forces of judgement

Yes. scatty = scatterbrained. :) I'm a foreigner, too. I think this is a British expression. I'm American and I like it.

I like typing them out because doing it in audio form would make me feel more scatty than I am.

(I think I like this new phrase, but then again I also am aware of it's poo-ey connotation.)

poo-ey

If you replace that hyphen with the right letter, you've got my last name.

I sorta enjoyed doing it. . .but I have to be alone in the house and that is not an everyday thing.

I like watching them but almost certainly would never make one myself.

I don't understand the spoken word nearly as well as the written word. (The ear doctors tell me it's the ADD, not anything physically wrong with my hearing.) So I personally tend to avoid audio on the internet.

I'm just one person, and probably no one else has this issue, but you did ask.

I really liked watching them. I would have done one had I the time and a reasonably quiet house for five damn minutes in which to it. So next time around, I will endeavor to join in.

I have a semi-Luddite aversion to video online (TV is for watching; internet is for reading), so I didn't watch them, and I don't want video of myself online, so I won't do one. Which makes me sound like a total grouch, I realize. I certainly think it's great to have them, but I'd love to have the text version as well.

Actually, I was thinking the last time we had one that what I'd *really* like to have are more separate threads where we respond to each person's stuff, rather than one giant thread in which there's very little interaction. I kind of feel like we've lost the "chat" and it's more just status updates all the time.

I think this is a nice idea, and I will make an effort to do this more. I've always enjoyed posts from our users about their lives- it's one of the unique features of Metachat. Not that I don't also enjoy cute stuff from the web, but I get that tons of places (Mefi, other blogs, etc).

I just bought a new web cam.

What about a four-point update where the first point should be a response to someone else?
posted by TheophileEscargot 22 March | 13:24
I like that idea, Theophile.

Great idea TheophileEscargot! I miss chat, too. Not that I have been "present" lately. I do try to come in and read on a regular basis.

They're ok as a special treat once in a while, but I'm very busy and don't have access to audio at work (when I usually read MetaChat). I'm also a reader rather than a listener.

I liked finding out what people sound like, and in some cases look like, but I definitely couldn't do it on a regular basis . . . would have to cart around a mike, took awhile to upload and link the upload -- much easier to just type a 3 point update into the little box, preview, and publish.

And I too prefer the chatty threads where our focus is on a few bunnies rather than a board where we all provide mostly non-interactive data points.

Heh, it's funny...I hadn't really ever had the thought coalesce entirely, but now that you mention it, I also have noticed that the status updates often don't amount to much in terms of interplay. I like the 4 point idea too!
posted by richat 22 March | 14:42
I don't know that I'd ever get up the nerve to do a video update but I really enjoyed watching them.

I also like the idea of a four-point update.

I loved watching them, but I'm not sure how often I'd do one. I guess I'd have to sign up on yt to post one. I'd want to get all ambitious about post-processing the video, to mask the likely boringness of the content.

Yay!

I liked doing it, though it made me nervous. I saw that a lot more people watched my link than participated in the discussion which makes me think that people are shy or don't have the technology and we should make it a once-in-a-while thing instead of standard.

If I have to comb my hair to do something, the odds of me doing it go waaaaaaay down.
