This rings sort of true. I have a friend who's insanely cheerful, and he has taken more risks with his health than anyone I know. He has high cholesterol, interestingly. His optimism tends to mean he doesn't take potential health issues that seriously - "it'll all work out!" - and doesn't like to project future scenarios that aren't that great, so his financial planning for is pretty iffy. He was a longtime smoker, and still smokes on and off, kind of unable to quit permanently, apparently, but is kind of irrationally optimistic that he won't get sick from it. He has started to focus more on that stuff now that he's in his 40s, but he spent a lot of happy-go-lucky years ignoring the serious stuff.
This probably means my mother will "live to be over a hundred, and then move in with me and pee on my carpets and make my life a living hell", just as she has threatened to do.
They either live longer, or it just seems that way.
Yeah I was waiting for that snark :)
But the people referred to in the article, it reads like they are busy volunteering and working and suchlike because they *like* it. I think they would probably say well fuck that to any other way. Gotta do what works for you.
