The Prison Diaries: Canine Edition Liberation Day![More:]

Okay. So. Today was the tenth day after the vicious attack that left a nearly insignificant wound on Mrs. Doohickie's hand. The suspect doggies were to be quarantined for 10 days, which meant today was Liberation Day. The logistics got kind of complicated.

Sugar was at Animal Control all week, since her shots were not up to date on The Fateful Day. Animal Control took pity on us and let us quarantine Winston at home. So this meant that this morning I had to take Winston to the vet to have him officially pronounced non-rabid, and picked him up after work.

Mrs. Doohickie, meanwhile, stopped by the pound on the way home to pick up Sugar. The bills for both dogs fell short of what we thought they would be, and as of right now we haven't been cited for not having Sugar's shots up to date. She is now fully immunized and back in our hands. The first order of business was a bath because, frankly, I suspect Animal Control's idea of cleaning her cage was to spray a garden hose at her. She looked and smelled awful when we got her back.

With all the dogs back in the house Winston, Sugar and Cookie (The Innocent One), things are back to normal. No, not quite normal. So far, better than normal. Winston doesn't seem as interested in getting in Sugar's face, and Sugar doesn't seem as instantly offended by Winston. And Cookie, The Dog Who Is Afraid of Everyone and Everything, is a little braver and will actually lay down near Winston.

So maybe this was all for the better. I hope the effect is lasting and not just a transitional thing.

Yeah, I'm not gonna go that far, but I'm still glad the doggies have made it home without issue.

Well, not quite without issue. Apparently Sugar contracted kennel cough while there. She didn't start coughing until she tried to go to sleep for the night, and had several coughing fits during the night. :(

The intarwebs tell me it will go away on its own. I know our other two dogs got immunized against it.

Aw, poor Sugar. Kennel cough is a pain in the ass. I'm so glad she's home with her people!

Glad things have mostly resolved! Hope Sugar recovers from the kennel cough soon :(

So glad they're through with all that.

Not quite sure about Sugar; she was running a fever when I got home from work. She was playing with Winston in the back yard (our yard is divided in half by a fence so she could stay away from him if she wanted), but when I got home, they were dashing back and forth along the fence line. I think maybe she overdid it, because when she came in and calmed down, she had a runny, slimy, warm (hot!) nose, was very lethargic, and I was seriously worried. She rested some and the fever came down. She's looking a little better, but if she doesn't seem better in the morning I may take her to the vet. But that cough sounds awful.

I've read a couple of times that a dog's nose isn't the indicator of health we once thought it was.

My rule of thumb for dog illness has become: If they are fairly normally active, if they are eating, if the poop is the right consistency, if they are drinking normal amounts, they are probably not in need of a trip to the vet... But, don't take my advice on how to take care of your four-footers, you're the best judge.
