28 February 2011

shakey shakey [More:]
The storms didn't put on much of a show for me tonight. But! I experienced my first earthquake. It was storming, suddenly the door next to me starts rattling and I heard several weird sounds in the wall behind me. My first thought was the storm but the wind wasn't very loud and it wasn't thundering at that exact moment. I thought earthquake for all of one moment then brushed the thought aside since we do not ever have earthquakes here. But sure enough I find out that there was a 4.7 quake southeast of here and the time matches. Around 130 miles away, surprised it was that noticeable up here since it wasn't that strong.

Looking at that site I notice that there have been several small quakes down there in the last week. Weird.
I remember when I was little and lived near Portland there was an earthquake somewhere and pine needles fell off our roof. I think. Something fell off our roof. Anyway, yep, that's my earthquake.

I've been through two mild ones. Yikes...up on the fourth floor of a large building, they're doubleplus unfun.

No earthquake but my phone was beeping off it's cradle this morning with four different weather alerts: "Tornado Watch, Severe Thunderstorm Warning, Areal Flood Warning, Flood Advisory, Areal Flood Watch". It's pitch dark at 7:30 AM right now and raining like hell.

I swear that I felt one up here in Chicago last week. I sent a report to the USGS, and a couple of the Arkansas quakes have responses from Illinois, but none of them are mine. I think small earthquakes are fun (read: no damage) - it's such a unique feeling.
