we can haz kitteh... [More:]

This guy was one of a litter of kittens found under a dumpster in a Denver Public Schools bus lot last winter during a cold snap.

He's a year old, fixed, very laid back, and has lovely cornflower blue eyes. He's what I'd call a lilac point tabby; he's got all the stripey tabby jazz on his points, which are a lovely lilac grey, but of course all the rest is white, which will look hella awesome on our rugs and clothes :)

some friends of ours asked us if we could take him, since they already have 2 weiner dogs, a bunch of fish, another cat and a 5 month old baby.

Once he gets over being weirded out by the change in digs, we'll get some better photos of him.

Any thoughts on a name? His foster family just called him "Cat", which while apropos, doesn't quite capture his elegant gravitas.
pictures, because, well, you have to put cat pictures up right?

Frank. Because of the blue eyes.

toastedbeagle: we did think about "Sinatra" but it just doesn't quite fit. You can't tell (it's an extremely oversized chair) but he's a HUGE cat. Like, HUGE. Almost coon cat-sized. Not really fat, just burly. My most annoying colleague at work also happens to be a "Frank", so it's kind of eh.

Oscar.

or Brando.

He looks like a big burly tough but gentle guy with nice eyes. Very noir detective like. I'll suggest Marlowe or Bogart. Being a cat I'm sure he is familiar with the idea of The Big Sleep.

ooh arsey, you maybe onto something there... hm. I'll sleep on it :)

He's a fine looking cat. If you name him Dubious, you could call him Doobie for short.

Oh I was going to suggest cloud too. Could be a Claude. Or maybe Kumori (cloudy in Japanese).

Yay for the new kitteh! He's gorgeous.
What's his personality like? In the past, my cats have just kind of found their names based on that. It can take a little while.
Hugs to you and yours for taking in this guy.

He's gorgeous! From the length of the legs in the first photo, he does look huge. I like arse_hat's naming idea.

Marlowe is an awesome name. I couldn't do better than that.

No name ideas here, but wow, he's gorgeous!

He's gorgeous. Call him Banjo.

I second fleacircus, I saw the cat and I thought, "Oscar" before reading the comments.

Does he tend to stay put? Maybe 'Magnet'.

Magnus/Magneto? He's lovely.

Fedora?
posted by Trilby 21 February | 11:35
I'd give him some elegant but old-fashioned man's name, such as Sebastian or Cedric or Theodore. Or Dorian Gray.;-)
posted by Orange Swan 21 February | 11:43
heh, Trilby :) the mister wears his dad's fedora FYI.

"Marlowe" appears to be top of the list right now, although we'll have to let the kitty kind of tell us which name is right.

Orange Swan, I like the way you think. He's definitely a suit-and-tie kind of personality.

Fedora evokes both "film noir" and the colour gray, but it leaves something to be desired as an actual name. Trilby's just being his usual narcissistic self. If your cat was female he probably would have suggested you name her Tam.

Marlowe would be a good name for your new pussycat. Let us know what you settle on!

What a beautiful cat!

I like Marlowe. And yay, pretty kitty!

I also really like Marlowe. In the "cloud" theme - how about MacLeod.

Except for his colouring he really reminds me of my Mingo.
posted by deborah 21 February | 15:18
Hrm. Given his bulk, and fleacircus's Brando suggestion... Marlon?
posted by gaspode 21 February | 15:55
He looks just like my cousin's cat, whose name is Kramer.
posted by fogovonslack 21 February | 17:00
He's a gorgeous kiddo. Since he's big and kind of Yeti-like, how about "Squatch"? It's fun to say! Squatch Squatch Squatch...

Marlon, or Marion, like John Wayne's real first name? Congratulations.

Saki's real name was Hector Hugh Munro.

Another vote for Marlowe. If we had to stick with hats, though? Deerstalker. Or Busby.

you are all AWESOME, thanks so much! I copied the mister to this thread so he can consider the suggestions as well.

I definitely like Marlowe; it's the sort of name that will "wear" well, both spoken and yelled, with the bonus that Chandler was apparently a big cat fan himself; somewhere in his writings he mused about the tendency for his cats to lie on the exact writing pad he was trying to use. doop de doo, cats are weird, deedley doo... But he is "our" cat, so the mister's got to have a say about it as well, so I'll let him think on it.

All I know is that for starting out as a feral dumpster-kitty, he's extremely handsome and well mannered. Also talky and affectionate. Despite still being in the hidey-kitty phase of having been somewhat unceremoniously re-homed, he did venture out last night from his safe house under the futon to spend some quality time being brushed and petted and fussed over. He even played for a little bit with his new toy mousie!

he's certainly a mutt, and I'm thinking most likely a Maine Coon Cat mutt with some sort of Oriental breed mixed in. He's definitely got the Coon Cat size, feet, undercoat, and temperament, and he's got the more pointy/angular features of a MC or Oriental, not the smooshie-face of the Persian types. Zero white markings, no toes, lockets or even a tiny belly spot, so I'm guessing Himalayan and/or Turkish Van are fairly unlikely.

His point colouration and blue eyes absolutely preclude him from being pure MC tho. Both are verboten for the breed. I've had 2 Maine Coons / MC derivatives before and both were tabbies, so I'd say it's likely the tabby-stripes come from the MC side.

I will post an update in a couple more days after we decide for sure on his name, and also so that we're able to get a couple of really nice photos of him with the good camera - I need to get a good closeup of his face; his eyes are so pretty.
