Years ago when I worked downtown, the main Seattle one was one of my major Oases. While I do try to spend as much time and money in independent bookstores, (while we still have them....eesh...) I will miss this place.
I'm jealous of towns with bookstores, big box or mom & pop. The only new bookstore we have here is a Coles (think B. Dalton - pretty much useless). The only big box bookstore (Chapters) is in Langley, about an hour away. We do have a nice used bookstore here and another one about half an hour away. But if I need a new book for a gift it's Amazon.ca. Also, Amazon.ca sucks compared to Amazon.com except I can get free shipping from the .ca site.
This wasn't a bitching thread? I'll show myself out.
Makes me sad though in truth I can't remember the last time (outside of an airport) I went into a Borders brick and mortar store, and I very, very rarely order books from borders.com any more. So I guess that means I feel sad AND guilty.
I had a friend who was a manager at borders who would tell us of power struggles and mismanagement in levels above her. And then she was fired for no good reason. So I feel Borders deserves their fate.
Looks like my Border's has been spared. I like the big bookstores because they let me come in and buy a coffee and a pastry and then read whatever I want. Yes, I am one of those people.
