Is MeFi down for anyone else? I can't even get to status.metafilter.com, making me think there's a DNS problem somewhere along the line.
From http://metatalk.metafilter.com/20338/Who-broke-metafilter:
There's some DNS shifting going on on our end. We're hoping it's as transparent as possible but clearly there are some small wrinkles. I don't know the specifics, but it's definitely not you, it's us.

When I couldn't get status.metafilter.com I was starting to think it was me too. Thanks. Maybe I'll go outside and see what that's like.

Looks like whatever changes Matt made last night did not go as smoothly as planned and so he's undone them and things should be back to normal, we're hoping? ISP caching and some other vagaries may make everyone's experience not quite the same, sorry about this.

All good, thanks for the update, Jessamyn! You're golden, as always.

Afroblanco, could you update your post when you are able to access mefi? Thanks!

Try changing your network settings to use these DNS addresses: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.222.220. They worked for me last night and are still working.

For those who haven't done this before, here's a guide for Windows XP (should be almost identical for Windows 7).

1) Go to the Start menu and choose Network Connections.
2) Right click on Local Area Connection and choose Properties.
3) Click once on Internet Protocol and choose Properties.
4) In the new window, change "Obtain DNS server address automatically" to "Use the following DNS addresses".
5) Use 208.67.222.222 for Preferred and 208.67.222.220 for Alternate.

On a Mac, you can

- go to system preferences , click network
- click advanced in the lower righthand corner
- click DNS up near the top
- look at the servers that are on the lefthand side, click the plus button at the bottom of that list
- type in numbers, hit return
- select the other DNS servers [write them down someplace first] and click the minus to delete

I've been using Speakeasy's and Google's

216.231.41.2
216.231.41.22
8.8.4.4
8.8.8.8

Weird. Now when I click on the MetaFilter link from anywhere (from within the site, i.e., from MetaTalk, or from doing a Google search) I get the wikimedia front page... which, according to it, apparently does not exist. What the heck??
