I am in search of an object. Something that will delight me with its presence. Something that I can hold or sit with. Something I will come to cherish. I have no idea what it is yet but I'll know it when I see it. Suggestions?
antique glass paperweight?

I have many "meaningful" objects in my house. But if I started photographing and displaying them all, as I have the urge to, you'd all know how bored I am right now.

You could talk about something else if you are bored. Delight is kind of hard to quantify but I am in search of it in any form I can conceive. I just hope it's out there.
There are many things to talk about. It depends on what you find boring.

Here are a few of my favorite things, right now, Oprah style. A tiny plaster sculpture of Radha and Krishna. An alpaca wool hat with earflaps and a llama colorwork design. A saffron-colored cozy for my French Press I knitted myself. Black riding boots that make me feel like a cavalier. French tea tins full of pencils, buttons, matchbooks and the like. A red silk pillow with birds embroidered on it. One perfect white china teacup.

Steal my ideas as you will.

A really lovely snuggly quilt blanket thing.

A signed photo of Julie Andrews.

A collection of carved hippos in fine woods and minerals.

A stuffed syphilis microbe.

A talking Tim Gunn bobblehead that says, "I can't want you to succeed any more than you do."

A light-up goose lamp named Leonard.

A giant magnet of Liberace with a baton, high-stepping in star-spangled hot pants, fringed top and matching knee-high argyle socks.

A gargoyle and my bronze horse statuette, Bucephelus. Bucephelus sits on the base of my monitor with a few friends that are almost as cherished; two rat netsuke and a dark green jade rabbit (I need to photograph them as well).

I have a more then normal attachment to hand-made pins or cufflinks or other small jewelry.

A sourdough bread starter named Darryl.

A bit more exotic, but what about a netsuke? (pronounced NET-ski - the U is nearly silent). They come in a wild selection of styles. New ones don't cost a lot and you can sometimes find older ones for good prices too.

I've always wanted... something... that was made in the 16th century. But I don't know what (maybe a small box? trinket?), or where I would be able to buy such a thing, or how much I could expect to pay for a small 500-year-old thing.

A blanket that my sister-in-law's sister-in-law made for me.

An antique bedside table.

Many many shirts stolen from my brothers and father.

Objects that I know other people have a similar relationship with:

- a baby pepper plant.
- a pair of hugging stuffed monkeys
- an apron
- a picture of a priest
- a potted orange tree

I understand what you're trying to find, but I think you have to stumble across it for yourself.

I admit to being a shallow person, but I have this relationship with my jewelry -- not just my engagement/wedding set and anniversary ring, but ALL my glittery, beautiful jewelry, from the antique rings I inherited from my grandmother to the pieces I have picked up over the years from the Smithsonian store and the Art Institute of Chicago store. I can tell you when I acquired each item, and I love them all.

This is why my husband calls me "Smaug" and says someday he'll find me lying on a bed of all my jewelry.
