I've seen magpies do a similar thing on a freshly-mown hill and the silly galah's at my parents place like to roll on their backs and play ball games with the seed pods off mum's liquid amber tree.
Somehow we don't tend to think of birds as playful so it's always a nice surprise.
How sweet... they're very intelligent. I once watched a crow try to pick up some saltines my father had thrown out in the backyard, and, discouraged, drop them, then proceed to stack the crackers one on top of the other, scoop up the stack in his beak, and fly away.
I was thinking this was related to preening behavior too, but it's so cute it doesn't matter what the purpose is. CUTE! The other videos in the series were neat, too. But then I'm a bird lover.
