My grandson Austin at the tomb of James Whitcomb Riley. This photo worked really well because of the mirror effect between Austin and the statue of the child reading poetry, but more for me because it's a memento of a day we spent together.

I took this photo in anticipation of a "Green" color-themed contest, but it has continually grown on me the more I look at it- just the simplicity and agreeable randomness of the leaves appeals to me.

I like the timeless feel here, that reminds me strongly of the 1950's urban diner/luncheon grill.

I got to spend a few hours with Jessamyn when she visited here in August: this is my favorite photo from that day, and one of my favorite portraits this year.

This off-the-cuff candid photo made my shortlist of favorites of all-time. I got lucky on the composition and was alert enough to grab the shot. Taken inside the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

My granddaughter Akane, waiting for me to stop messing around with the camera and go play with her at Skee-Ball.

When I take pictures, I try to frame everything. I need to go back to this to get a better picture, but I like the depths of frames.

I love taking pictures at the Bye and Bye, which is my favorite bar in walking distance (and the one I feel most comfortable going to in Portland). The light during the day / during sunset make me bring things here specifically to take pictures. This is my partner Brian in this picture, and I like that there is someone else with a camera in the shot.

Eastern Oregon has lots to explore. I know lots of people have pictures here, but this is mine, and I love it.

From the same trip - a rare weekend off for us. It was great. This is south of Bend, Oregon at the lava beds. It's probably my favorite picture of my partner in the last ten years.

A new friend, and an amazing photographer, near Bagby Hot Springs on Mt Hood, contemplating a path to get down a waterfall to get the shot he wanted. He is willing (and much more able as a triathlete and extreme sport guy) to find the exact angle to take a picture.
For a few years I pulled back from society as much as I could without becoming a hermit. In the last 16 months I have been moving back to being the social animal I am. But with that I found that I don't want to share things unless they are things I have already shared with other people. So, only some snapshots.
At the summit of Mt. LeConte in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an overlook known as Cliff Top. The vegetation at well over 6000 feet elevation is surprising, and remarkable. ≡ Click to see image ≡
A pond at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. I love the surrealism of the lily pads floating over the "sky." ≡ Click to see image ≡
Also at the botanical gardens- I like how the shadow runs up the column on the right to make sort of a spiral. ≡ Click to see image ≡
This looks to me like a monument of some kind, but it's really just the base of an old bank sign in Florida, with an afternoon thunderstorm brewing. ≡ Click to see image ≡
Just a funny perspective... Salvador Dali vs. a bloody mary. Spotted while having lunch w/ elizarde one day. ≡ Click to see image ≡
Another Florida pic. Reminds me of something from a J.G. Ballard story. ≡ Click to see image ≡
Taken with a tiny toy digital camera, this one feels very dreamlike: ≡ Click to see image ≡

I love this picture. About a second after I took it, Stuart poked his sister in the eye. ≡ Click to see image ≡
My town does a "Cruise Night" in the summer. We take the kids on many of them to get out of the house and have a cheap meal out. The lighting was perfect for this. ≡ Click to see image ≡
When I took this badly composed picture, it made me acutely aware that Stuart was no longer a toddler and is clearly a boy. ≡ Click to see image ≡
Love the colors. ≡ Click to see image ≡

My daughter waited very patiently to blow out her candles.
It would appear that most of my favourites this year are pictures of Evelyn. I'll have to try harder to take more pictures of Sophie!
This one turned into a picture I really like, despite having shot it while turning around, and pretty much from my hip without looking. ≡ Click to see image ≡
This one - well, I think it captures the fun with which the girls live their lives: ≡ Click to see image ≡
This one almost makes me sad now, because my parents have sold this house, so it'll be the last time I got to enjoy the world's best hammock. ≡ Click to see image ≡
And this one was taken at a camping/music festival that I'm involved with. I love the focus and the tongue-out grin on Evelyn! ≡ Click to see image ≡
And lastly...you know that weird yellow light that comes before a storm? Evie and I took off outside to see if it photographed well. The storm that followed was a lot of fun too!
This time last year, we were covered in snow. Haven't had more than a couple of flurries so far this winter (though that *may* change next week): ≡ Click to see image ≡
Sunset, Cape San Blas, Florida, annual trip down there. The sunsets aren't this pretty every evening....just most of them. ≡ Click to see image ≡
December 31st, Coya's fifth adoption-anniversary. Love this picture. It just captures her goofy spirit so well. ≡ Click to see image ≡

The Decemberists at MFNW. Got the whole band in this. Colin is a bit washed out, but the rest of the band was caught in pretty typical poses.

Newberry Volcano from a plane. I love this because it is a totally neat place, and while East Lake is frozen, Paulina (paul-EYE-na) Lake is thawed, presumable because it gets more sun and because there are more steam vents under it (you can see steam coming off the water in the morning).

Playing with my new Lumix G1, this was one of the first actual pictures I took with it. It's my favorite picture of the boy now.

Seeing this picture after I scanned it was the exact moment I fell in love with black and white film and my Holga simultaneously.

Just Patton Avenue at sunset but I really love the light. It looks eerily desert-like to me. Keep in mind that I have never actually been to a desert.

I am very fond of this photo even though none of my friends like it. The title is Picnic of Despair - I consider it part of my gloom induced Scandinavian Landscape series. Hee. Darkness! Bleak existential doom! It never fails to crack me up.

Happy Mardi Gras lady! The colors on this are so awesome, the gray February day made everything pop.

Favorite from my San Francisco trip last March. It's not a perfect picture by any means but I really like the slice of life street photography feel of it.

Ah Asheville. Ah, my neighborhood. This is so quintessentially Asheville and I'm so glad I was shooting in black and white that day. I took this from my car.

Rain on the West Asheville street festival. The smoke is perfect.
Gosh thanks bearwife! My pics are under the Creative Commons Noncommercial licence so anyone can just grab them for personal prints if they want. I have slightly higher res versions locally (4000*3000 minus cropping) if anyone wants.
A couple of times people have asked for commercial use and I've just given it to them: a guy doing a book on black British artists, and an online London travel guide. I don't think I could have extracted much money from them.
