MP3 Shuffle-a-gogo anyone? What comes up on your MP3 shuffle? [More:]

Crappy day at work already (and now I have to miss tonight Chicago MeFi meetup), so I decided to take a shuffle break.

You know the rules: MP3 player on shuffle, first ten songs, no cheating. Here's mine with some comments:

1. MISSION OF BURMA - Let Yourself Go (the Obliterati 2006) From the second album of the reunited MoB. It seems like in the reunitied version I like Peter Prescott's the best.

2. the HOLLIES - Confessions of a Mind (Confessions of the Mind 1970) The Hollies are one of my favorite bands of the 60's, but this is around the point where they're records started getting a bit spotty. Other than the always great Hollies harmonies this song is not very good.

3. CHUCK BERRY - No Money Down (the Chess years box) You just can't go wrong with Chess era Chuck Berry. Hopefully he's doing better after his New Years day health issues in Chicago. I'm stunned he's still touring at 84!

4. STEELY DAN - Daddy Don't Live In New York City No More (Katy Lied 1975) One of my favorite SD songs.

5. MARTIN NEWELL - Christmas In Suburbia (the Greatest Living Englishman 1993) Hmmm...I'll have to remember this if we do the Christmas mix thing again.

6. MULL HISTORICAL SOCIETY - Am I Wrong (Us 2003) One of the few artists that gets compared to Pet Sounds era Beach Boys that I think actually deserves it.

7. SAM PHILLIPS - Same Changes (Martinis and Bikinis 1994) Damn I love Sam Phillips. She perfectly mixes killer pop with slightly odd arrangements. Even her happy songs sound just a little sinister.

8. ELLIOTT SMITH - Ballad of Big Nothing (Either/Or 1997) Love Elliott, but after that Sam Phillips song, I'm just not in the mood for his mopeyness.

9. PINK FLOYD - Jugband Blues (Echoes Best of) I haven't listened to Syd era Pink Floyd in ages, although I probably prefer his solo albums to his work with Pink Floyd.

10. WARREN ZEVON - I'll Sleep When I'm Dead (Warren Zevon 1976) Just reloaded the first few WZ albums to my MP3 player. I sometimes take him for granted and forget how much I love those albums.

After listening to 2010 releases for the past two months for my Year End Top 50 it's nice get a bunch of old stuff.

So...what did you get?
1. Chris Isaak - Wicked Game
2. The Mamas and The Papas - Glad To Be Unhappy
3. Cry Cry Cry - Fall on Me
4. Tegan and Sara - Sentimental Tune
5. Leonard Cohen - Dance Me To The End of Love
6. Tegan and Sara - Missing You
7. The Nerves - When You Found Out (thanks BP)
8. Spinal Tap - Christmas With The Devil
9. Elvis Costello - Brilliant Mistake
10.Rilo Kiley - Spectacular Views

The Rocky Horror Show (Selected Highlights) - Super Heroes (w/narration by Christopher Lee)

Steve Miller Band - Mercury Blues (bite it, Alan Jackson)

Cabaret (OST) - Sitting Pretty (an instrumental interlude)

Eagles - Tryin' (last song on the second side of the first album; I have never noticed this one before, it actually rocks)

Meat Loaf - Not a Dry Eye in the House (Meat speaks for himself)

This selection is quite representative of the range of music styles I like.
Nena - 99 Luftballoons (one of the few songs I can set to repeat anytime I stumble upon it)

Clancy Brothers - The Stuttering Lovers (a bit of Irish to brighten the morn; "she's never been kissed before")

Feature Fais Do Do 2 - Track 6 (some Cajun music of unknown origin; just google as shown)

Chicago - A Hit By Varese
("Something to move me
Remove me and groove me,
you want to know why?
I'm so tired of oldies
And moldies and goldies,
that I want to cry")

Deep Purple - Never Before (one of the underrated songs on Machine Head; equal to any of the more oft played cuts)

1. The B-52s: Mesapotamia (I've read that the B-52s thought David Byrne was "mean" during the recording of this EP)

2. Beastie Boys: Tough Guy

3. Plushgun: Let Me Kiss You Now (And I'll Fade Away) Plushgun are kind of a one-man American Belle & Sebastian, esp. on this song

4. Poppees: Jealousy old proto-power-pop

5. Berlin: Pictures of You This album will ALWAYS remind me of spring break in Daytona Beach, in 1984.

6. Royksopp: You Don't Have A Clue

7. Funkadelic: Mommy, What's A Funkadelic? From their very first album

8. The Go-Go's: Lust To Love From THEIR first album. No bad songs on that original record, IMO.

9. Tim Minchin: If I Didn't Have You

10. Prince: Temptation

1. Modest Mouse: Fire It Up
2. Styx: Come Sail Away
3. Regina Spektor: Flying
4. Something Corporate: Caldecott Tunnel
5. Richard Marx: Hazard
6. Radiohead: Street Spirit
7. The Police: So Lonely
8. The Wolfe Tones: Ta' na La'
9. The Decemberists: July, July
10. Fanfarlo: Luna.

Sounds pretty good to me. For the last one - I ended up going to a party with those guys after a show nearby. Super nice. It was weird to hear them on the radio a week after.

Arse - I haven't heard that Pato Banton cut in years! And it's nice to see a Clash boot in the mix - I was just listening to Clash at Bonds over the weekend.

slack, that Pato Banton song got a 65 year old neighbor to start telling me about how much he used to love reggae. I burned him a cd of some of his old favorites.
