23 December 2010

25 Years ago yesterday... Dennes Dale Boon had his fatal accident. [More:]I was all of six years old when that happened, and it was a good dozen or so years after that fact that I got exposed to the Minutemen. And damn if I'm not grateful for that on a near daily basis.

So, in some kind of slackey tribute, here are some live clips (some of which are on the fanfuckingtastic 2nd disc of "We Jam Econo", but not all). RIP (still) and thanks (still) Dennes.

Little Man With a Gun in His Hand

Jesus and Tequila

Joe McCarthy's Ghost

Retreat/Anxious MoFo

The Roar of the Masses Could Be Farts

I meant to pull this together yesterday, but it just didn't happen. Think of it as shit from an old blogpost)
Wow...25 years eh? Wow.

Yesterday was also the 8th anniversary of Joe Strummer's death. At least, I think it was 8. Either way, I drank a couple whiskeys in their honour.

This prompted me to listen to some old Minutemen songs and damn if "The Red and the Black" doesn't sound just as fresh today as it did 25 years ago. Those propulsive drums, straining to stay ahead of Watt's rippling bass and the whole thing glinting with the shards of Boon's furious high-pitched guitar runs. The song sounds organic, like six hands and three heads playing as one. Just magnificent.

What would D., Mike, and George have created if that accident never happened? Dammit, there's a hole in the world.
