It was for me in my High School Band (#1 in its class in SoCalSchoolBandAssn in my junior year), but then I'm not 25+ feet tall. We did have 15-inch tall hats and kept an eye on the taller members, not to mention sousaphone elevation, but nothing close to that. And no, the hats were NOT compensating for anything.

And one reason we placed well in the SCSBA competition was because the competition was a parade of ALL bands, NO horses.
