Where to buy quality bathrobes? Shhhh... I'm mulling over various Christmas gift ideas for the girlfriend and I could use a point in the right direction.[More:]

What it says on the tin.

Her current bathrobe, which was probably once a bright shade of pink, is now rather sorry looking, rough-feeling, and short.

I want to get her a new robe that is fuzzy soft, preferably one that will maintain that feeling for as long as possible, something decent, but also something a campus urchin like myself could afford. I've never bought one in my life so I don't know the first place to start.

Any clues on where I should look?
Land's End does fuzzy high-quality robes. Not always super-sexy, but they do tend to last.

I actually have a really nice bathrobe that was given to me some years ago from Victoria's Secret, of all places (I don't, in general, think much of the quality of their stuff). Don't know what they are like now, but it might be somewhere to consider.

I will testify that the L.L. Bean Winter Fleece bathrobe is really comfy/cozy, well-made, and very durable.

My honey was on a similar quest a couple years ago for me. Your first question is whether you want the robe to be warm or whether you want it to suck up some moisture sometimes. They're not mutually exclusive, but make sure you know whether she's leaning one way or another. I wanted the latter, a robe I could throw on after a shower and lounge around in if necessary.

He wasn't aiming for a trendy brand, but after checking out Lands End and all that he got me a fantastic Polo Ralph Lauren robe from Macy's. I think it was this one. It's a men's robe, but it's big enough for me while not making me swim in it. (I'm a top-heavy size 18. Hotcha.)

The plush is actually pretty smooth for being made of terry loops, and it's still nice and soft two years later. Oddly enough, the women's side doesn't offer a towely one, just flannel. (Their Charter Club house brand has a few, though, and they're usually pretty reliable.)

I'll 2nd gaspode on Victoria's Secret. They are terrible at bras (no, really. Ghastly.)

I do, however, find that their robes, PJs, skimpy little nothings and loungewear are pretty awesome for me. I have one of their robes and it's amazingly soft and shapely with adequate wrap that I'm not giving the neighbours a show when I go pick up the newspaper, and it's not so laughably long in my correct size that I'll end up resembling a dwarf dragging a curtain.

Much will also depend on the shape and preferences of your girl. The "preppy" suppliers (i.e. Land's End and L.L. Bean) have always tended to be rather uniformly boxy and unappealing on me (c.f. "dwarf...curtain" above), however if she's more of a tall / willowy / boyish build then they'll look great and it maybe better to search there. VS sleep / loungewear, etc..., (including their skimpy little nothings), has always seemed to have the bonus of fitting us more, err... girl-shaped girls.

Also, I seem to recall with VS that one major potential drawback was that you could get their robes in any colour you wanted, so long as it's white with hot pink embroidery. I didn't care, but some may.

And I'll 3rd Victoria's Secret. I've had my long, dark blue, terrycloth robe from them for about six years and still love the heck out of it.

If you have a JC Penny by you, check them out too. I bought the BF a wonderfully soft robe from there once - maybe the Stafford Soft Touch. He doesn't wear it all that often, so I can't really attest to its resistance to wear, but gosh is it soft.

I'll second Land's End! I have a Land's End t-shirt robe, and I loooooove it.

I'll definitely check out Land's End, LL Bean (my current beau) and Victoria's Secret. Thanks for the leads!

Thank you so much, as always. Every guy should be so lucky as to have a council of women to consult over such matters.

Thanks for this thread! I need a bathrobe for myself and some of the men's robes from the various places mentioned here look just yummy.

I've had cotton terry robes from VS/Cacique and liked them....but some time ago the Lands' End towels were rated the best by Good Housekeeping, so that's now where I buy bathrobes/linens.

I own an incredibly soft and warm and wonderful pink microfiber bathrobe I bought at a spa/hotel awhile back. This looks like a good approximation and the reviews are great.

Some years ago my dad sent a mysterious note to lots of people, saying he'd discovered something luscious and he was sending one to each of us. Some time later, I received a bathrobe from "The Robe Works," which was indeed decadent and luscious and has lasted many years while remaining so. I think it's this:
