Feuerzangenbowle anyone had this before? Any idea where I can get it in the Midwest?
That sounds an awful lot like glögg. If you're specifically looking for the bowl, you might look in German or Scandinavian specialty stores (of which there should be many in the upper Midwest). Otherwise, I think people use slotted spoons or just some well-scrubbed mesh.
As a child I read the story Der Feuerzangenbowle.
But that's of little use to you. :-)
My half-German mother used to make it. But that was easy since Germany is a half hour to one hour drive away. So getting the implements was easy.
I remember that she had a special metal implement that would go over the bowl. A half hollow metal strip with slots. The sugar with the rum would go on top of the metal strip. As the rum burned the sugar caramalised and dripped into the punch.
I googled feuerzange (that's the metal implement that gives the whole punch (bowle) its name). My first result was a german deli in texas. They translated the thing as a fire tong for punch bowl. So if you restrict your search for results from the US and/or in english I'm sure you'll find something.
If you can't find a Feuerzange I think a skimmer would work fine.
Do you have a fondue set? That would do fine as the bowl.
Have fun. It's very christmassy to see the faint blue flames in the somewhat darkened room.

Heinz Rühmann looks very rakish with his Feuerzangenbowle.
The movie was made in Germany in 1944. Not as late as Der Baron von Münchhausen. But still...
