Mother, shall I put you to sleep? Maariyamma is likely to be killed by her children because they cannot afford her. They will give her a loving oil bath. Several glasses of coconut water. A mouthful of mud. Perhaps a poison injection. She is just one of many old parents in Tamil Nadu dying in this way. But no one blinks at these ritual murders.
The Inuit did something similar when they left their elderly on an ice floe. Sometimes the elderly willingly sacrificed themselves.

how long has our species been around man? a couple hundred thousand years? in a couple hundred thousand years we can't figure out how to support people into their old age despite financial circumstances? what f'ing nonsense.

This should be posted on Metafilter. Baby boomers, watch out.

I've already told my kids that if I get to a point where I'm way out of it, they should go ahead and kill me. Honestly, I do not want to live bedridden and/or with dementia. I've seen it and it SUCKS.

Yeah, there's no way I want to hang on beyond my use-by date. One of the negative side-effects of modern medicine is that people continue to live when nature has decreed that they shouldn't.

Still, I would never condone killing a person just because they are a financial burden. If a person is capable of living a meaningful life (by their definition, not others'), they have a right to do so.

Right. My problem isn't with euthanasia it's with non-consent

That's just so sad. these elders understand that in severe poverty, no one can/will support them.

My cousins chose not to treat a medical condition when my aunt had Alzheimer's, and no longer knew anyone. She got comfort care, but not surgery. What was left of her mind wanted out, and I totally supported their decision. But these are healthy people in their right minds.
