Ask MeCha: addressing a grad-school rec letter A former employee wants a grad school reference. [More:] I'm sure she'll succeed and I'm happy to recommend her. Some of the schools have online forms, and I've already done those, but other schools want paper, and I'm equivocating on those. "Dear Sir/Madam"/"To the Admissions Committee"/"Yo, listen up"?
I always say Dear Madam or Sir, which seems to cover everything, since only one person is likely to be reading it at a time, and whoever that person is will probably fit into one of those categories. Although Yo Listen Up does have a certain charm . . . .

I would go with Dear Admissions Committee Members or similar. I believe that's how my rec letters worked.
