Bunnies Riding Ponies... While we make no promises at this point, the Metachat Tech Admins (chrismear & yours truly) are interested in finding out what you would like to see changed or added to or what you think is borked at metachat.org[More:]So essentially a fact-finding mission! No suggestion is stupid!

It would help if you stated a reason as well because it might help us in working towards solutions to problems.

Please don't start new threads - we will be reading and taking notes from this thread only at this point.

Ta!
I would like links to open in new windows or tabs by default. Could that be made to happen? It's so frustrating when I forget the link has opened in the same window and I end up having to restart my browser - and because my computer is old and crappy and my internet connection is hamster-powered, this seems to take ages.

Oooh oooh oooh so many ponies...

Spoiler tags/macros that black out strings of text unless you select or mouseover them, so you can write about the endings of things without bugging people.

Built-in polls.

Fixing the "Recent MeFi posts by Metachat users", extending it to Ask.

Single-sign-on for Wiki and Metachat.

Bookmark/Favourite/Hotlist/Pin option for posts. "Pin" would automatically pin it to a part of the sidebar, limited to the most recent 8 or so, so that you could keep book club or meetup threads or whatever interests you close to hand.

Tags or drop-down categories on each post. That would make it easier for things like the Book Club or other Mefi spin-offs, you could just link to a tag. Or you could find all the Photo Friday posts very easily.

(Um, I know I sound crazed with greed, not seriously expecting any of these ideas unless other people happen to want them).

Favorites.

(What can I say? I'm a degenerate.)

I like the Recent Comments page, but I'd like another one that only shows me recent comments in threads I posted or commented in (much as MeFi's Recent Activity page does).

Bookmarks/Favorites, whatever you want to call it. I would love to be easily able to keep track of things that have useful information or that make me laugh or that touch me. Please? I know the position taken on not having the feature, but to me it's boring like everyone gets a medal for showing up to field day. It might up participation, even.
posted by rainbaby 05 November | 07:48
I also would love some way to subscribe to threads that I've participated in...some sort of pinning, or the ability to get email notifications when there are new comments, akin to what happens when you post the original thread.

I know I can check via my user profile page and all, but I'd like something EASIER. Heh.

Publicly-viewable favorites would be antithetical to the nature of MetaChat, since they lead to the kind of status-seeking behavior seen on sites that use that kind of "ranking" system.

Privately-viewable favorites, if they're technically feasible, wouldn't harm the site or change the dynamic.

man!! when I write something and its like wrong HTML or too long or too short and the posting scripts blocks it, it just kills it! with a back to comment editing link

doesn't send you bakc to preview or anything. then you hit back and it gives you a browser screen that prevents form resubmission? and i'm like what. then I hit back on that and we get back to the page to comment on.. with an empty comment box. aaaah! let's stop that, if we can send filtered/broken comments back to preview somehow

I first disagree that they lead to status-seeking, and I further disagree that status-seeking is an inherently bad thing. Maybe the site dynamic could use a change. It's sloooow around here.

Look, I know the official position, and I never get a chance to opine about it unless asked, so, you asked.

What if you just call it something other than "favorite?" Why would anyone pathalogically seek "bookmarks?"

Private secret bookmarks would be better than nothing, but public ones would maybe allow me to notice who has similar interests, and then, if I have a question about said interest, I might email that user to discuss something in depth.

For example, I know UserXYZ plays Sport9 because he posts about it. So I had a Sport9 question, and I emailed the user privately, and got a good response. Yay metachat! But if I noticed that User123 frequently bookmarked UserXYZ's Sport9 posts, maybe I could have contacted them, too.

This is the way we do it becase this is the way we do it? I'm simply proposing a healthy re-examination.

I would like the comments page in a user's profile to show the full (or somewhat truncated) version of a comment, like the Mefi profile page does. Sometimes, I want to re-visit a user's comment, and trying to find it from their profile is like searching the whole haystack for the needle, sometimes.

Working search.

I would like links to open in new windows or tabs by default.

Disagree, hard. There are plenty of ways to open links in new tabs/windows no matter how the site's coded, but it's pretty hard to force them to open in the *same* window once that behavior has been changed.

unless i'm completely missing something, i would like something at the bottom of a page for "older/newer".

right now, if get to the bottom of the main page, i have to go to archives and then click on days.

Seconding an "older" or "archives" link at the bottom of the front page.

I think the simplicity of metachat is rather charming.
One thing I'd like is a bit more info about people in the profiles. As it is now I have to look somebody up on metafilter to find out where they live.
Otoh: maybe that's sufficient.

I would also like some more profile info.

I am also a favorite-seeking degenerate.

I would also like the older/newer thing. Sometimes I don't read the site over the weekend, and then I am a sad bunny because it would be a pain to go back.

I'm afraid that I don't have the big stuffed bunny I thought I had, so the best I can do is a ducky and a teddy bear riding ponies. Bonus video, Serenity thinks the stuffed toys are pretty awesome.

Is there some reason that there's no way to direct post, that we have to preview first? Perhaps this has been covered before. I do often preview before posting, but I don't usually feel a single line or so needs it.

Trying to browse posts older than a few days seems pretty difficult.

RSS for individual threads would be nice, or some other way to keep track of them in case someone posts something new once the discussion has mostly ended.

Please, no favorites!

However, if you wanted to add a little [+] link after the "posted by" line that had no actual effect but allowed me to indulge my muscle memory when I like a comment, I would not complain.

Some kind of Recent Activity type feature would be awesome.

I'd love bookmarks, either public or private --- just some in-site bookmarking mechanism that would let us keep track of individual posts or comments onsite.

(At the same time, I realize that's a luxury. I can always use a browser bookmark if I need to. So I guess what I'm saying is "Bookmarks would be swell if they aren't a big pain in the neck!")

Thanks for everything!

The search function drives me crazy. I wish it worked better. I'm always trying to look up photo fridays and see what we've done and not done and I get so much noise that the signal is lost. Google is not much better. There must be a way to get a canonical list - it would be very helpful! I know I should put one in the wiki but getting it to start with is just so damn hard.

I also kinda like favorites. But I don't really care, so, whatever.

Could the page go back to the comment you just posted, rather than to the top of the page?

Could we have a 'recent comments' link at the bottom of the page?

A 'recent activity' page like MeFi would be great. I don't think we should seek to be more like MeFi at all, but that particular feature is something that I find extremely useful for keeping track of things after they leave the front page. Especially threads that scrolled off the front page a loooong time ago ;-)

A link to the previous page that doesn't go through the previous post. A way to open links in a new tab without having to remember to do something special.

Yes, please:
- Return of the MeFi posts by Bunnies
- Add a similar AskMe posts by Bunnies
- Older/Newer option at the bottom of the front page
- More profile options/info such as location, birthday (age optional), etc.
- Add a "Also On X Social Site" like on MeFi profile pages

No, thanks:
- I like favourites too, but not at MetaChat

I checked at the thrift store today and didn't find any big stuffed bunnies, by the way. Sorry.
posted by galadriel 05 November | 21:38
I'd like an older/newer at the bottom of the page, too. Searching is difficult, too, for some reason that I can't elucidate. Maybe it's having to tick off something like "users" instead of just searching?

Thanks for entertaining ponies!

I mainly lurk here, so my opinion should be taken in that light, but a older / previous link at the bottom is something I always look for even though I know it's not there.

This. Having links open in a new tab by default is a terrible idea. There's super simple ways of accomplishing this with a key stroke (ex. command click link on a mac). It's rare to find a site of any quality that does it by default. Because, again, it's a terrible idea.
