03 November 2010

I'm curious about the emcee we started around this time last year. I understand there were some inevitable delays and I'm not trying to criticize anyone at all. Will we ever see it, or has it been scrapped? I had fun participating, but I can let go of my curiosity if it has.
That would be me. I'm sorry I flaked on organizing it. It took over half a year to get all the pieces back (that's not a typo) and I totally got bored and lost interest, then decided to just frigging do it (put it all together) and then my pc crashed.

I don't have all the pieces any more. Hopefully everyone still has theirs and possibly someone else can collect them all and put it together. Shane had volunteered to take over for me several times and I should have taken him up on it. He was my rantee when I needed someone to complain to about it. There were several times I would send someone a slice and then have to follow up over and over and over and after a month or so they would finally tell me they just didn't have time to do it. So the timeline here was that I got pissed, lost interest, ignored it for several months, felt guilty, decided to get over my miffedness, computer crashed, dug hole in sand, crawled in.

I really apologize, I totally dropped the ball. I can tell you that you were one of the very few who had a nice quick turnaround. I remember that because it was so rare ;)

I am googling and searching MeCha but still feel ignorant -- is an emcee some kind of art collage?

The Wiki's helpful for some stuff like this, though not completely up to date. There's a brief emcee entry under MetaChat Miscellany.

I would love to see this project resurface. I understand how totally frustrating the waiting and nagging is, but if anyone does want to pick it up and go forward, that would be great - because these are amazing.

A lot of my work and off-time life has involved coordinating volunteer labor, and I do sympathize because it's difficult and usually thankless. There are some strategies that I have found make it easier, though, and I offer them in case they would help anyone in coordinating such a project.

In general, I think that excruciating patience often has to be part and parcel of volunteer projects. Because it's for fun and not for work or an obligation, people tend to keep dropping the voluntary stuff to the bottom of the to-do list. And it tends to be true that though everyone wants something to happen, no one is quite as motivated to make it happen as the person who's stepped up to handle the coordination. So a coordinator has to either frequently nag and be okay with that, or implement some system of regular reminders with a hard and fast expiration deadline. Like, "You have two weeks to return this; if I don't get it back, I'll move to the next person on the list." Then a week later "You have one week remaining to get this back to me." ..."Only 3 more days to get this back!" ..."Today's the last day...tomorrow I will take your name of the list and move on to the next person." And then follow through with the threat of moving down the list. If the person is genuinely disappointed, they'll be more punctual next time. If not, they will just be relieved they no longer have to do that crazy thing they said yes to.

Of course, all that reminding? What a pain in the ass! But on the other hand, the waiting and waiting and ad hoc nagging and difficulty moving the project forward is also a royal pain in the ass - I'd say, in the end, even more of a pain in the ass. I think a lot of great projects fail because even though everyone has goodwill, it's too easy to say "yes" to something when the actual doing of the project is off in the abstract. When it comes time to deliver the goods, of course one still wants to say "yes" to it, just not now. Not now becomes not ever because one always puts it off. Having some means of putting a finite end to that interminable putting-off process is invaluable in getting anything to the finish line.

I'm sure mine is still on my old computer. I'll do what I can to find it and get it to you.

I'll upload mine when I get back to work tomorrow. I was quite proud of it.

Mine is gone, because I did it at work and I doubt I saved it to a safe place when we moved to our new facility last spring. This may become the Emcee's "Lost Album." And we'll finally complete it 30 years from now after everyone thought we were dead.

Wow, I had completely forgotten about this. This was the slice I sent in. Maybe we can just assemble it here, IN OUR MINDS!

I have my slice and would love to see if we can still stitch things together; also, more than happy to help with this in any way.

I just found a bunch of them in gmail. BP, yours is there.

Hurray!

I'll volunteer to do the stitching if you'd like, iconomy.

That would be terrific. After the crash I got a Macbook and have no graphics program at all, so...yeah. I'll send you every one that I have and if you look at this list you should be able to recreate who was on what team and stitch from there. Hopefully I still have all of them. Thank you!

I have mine, if you need it, jamaro. Thanks for offering to do the stitching!

And thanks again for the initial inspiration, iconomy, it was a blast to work on; don't worry about the delay, it just popped into my head so I thought I'd ask.

I'm glad you did.

I just sent jamaro all of the pieces I still had in gmail - pretty sure I had all of them except possibly not arse_hat's. Will look again for his.

MC 1 is complete but if it's OK, I'd like to hold off on sharing while we hammer out some difficulties with #2 and #3.

Thanks, jamaro (and iconomy).

I liked it too. I was proud!

The only slice we're missing is arse_hat's contribution for #3. MC1 and MC2 are complete.

I love it when a plan comes together!

I only have a vague idea of what mine looked like. Can't wait to see them all!
