I'm listening to The Promise on NPR's First Listen. It's amazing how much evolution "Candy's Room" went through - among other songs.
It does remind one that dour Bruce is not a new phenomenon.
I like this "Save My Love." I've learned over the years that it's impossible for me to judge Bruce albums on one or two listens. I really have to give the album a few playthroughs before it settles out into one of my favorites or one of the rest.
I've been on a giant Springsteen kick for a bit. Ever since I got a copy of "Wings for Wheels" - the doc about the making of Born to Run. jonmc had recommended it ages ago, but I had a heck of a time finding it.
He's pretty eloquent when discussing the early stuff, what his goals were, where he was coming from, etc. And, I'm amazed the E Street band still talks to him, after hearing about those marathon days in the studio. He must be pretty compelling to put up with that focused a vision, you know?
I've seen a little bit of The Promise, and it looks every bit as good. For anyone who loves having music placed in the context of its time, and hearing about the recording process, and how songs that are now ICONIC were built...I can't imagine two more amazing pieces of documentary watching.
It's great, eh Miko? I love how he describes the notion that Born to Run is taking place in different parts of New Jersey, but all in the same night.
And how Bruce was so adamant that he throw out any line that seemed clichéd. That really struck me because that record has spawned many a cliché, but until he wrote it, it wasn't a cliché YET!
