12 October 2010

Ever had one of those days that just didn't start right? [More:]

Alarm didn't go off. For the second morning in a row. Rather, it activated at the proper time, but it didn't make any noise, despite the fact that the ringer on my phone is on and turned up to 5.

Combination of alarm not sounding plus 1/2 Benadryl taken last night due to insane fucking wind kicking up allergens = oversleeping by 90 minutes. The chickens usually wake me up by 7:30 in protest of being cooped up, but the insane fucking wind last night kicking up allergens meant that the windows stayed closed and the chicken alarm went unheard as well.

Got up, quickly showered and made coffee and unlocked the chickens. Fortunately already had a lunch packed. Got to the bus stop with two minutes to spare.

Bus 10 minutes late.

Bus filled with about 30 second graders, half of whom were coughing. Stupid undergraduates like to stake out their space when standing in the bus aisles, and are as reluctant to cede their square foot of bus real esate as a miner would be to give up a gold claim. So at each stop, the little 20-year-old bus driver had to yell "Everyone please move back!", her little engineering-major's voice struggling to be heard over the 30 coughing, tittering second graders.

I finally started grabbing the stupid undergraduates by their shirts and pointing them to the back of the bus. Each stop took forever.

Finally the bus turned onto B Street and towards campus. The home stretch.

The home stretch was being resurfaced and it took a full 10 minutes to go those 7 blocks.

I feel like that alarm clock that never went off that morning is sitting in the middle of my chest, buzzing.
I overslept also. My wife had to get up at 6:50 (she had a rare 7:30 appt), so she set her alarm. I NEVER have an alarm but always get up between 5 and 6, depending on whether I am going to volleyball.

Well this morning I felt her jostling, and it was 6:50. I had to be at work at 7:30, so I just brushed my teeth, got dressed and got on my bike. All the time staying out of Wife's way (we need our own space in the morning).

Hence, no coffee or breakfast until, like 10. The day promises to be like this!

I've been awake battling with Elliot Mason to go back to sleep since 1am. It's after 4am now and I just give up. I've turned the light on and let him run around. But I don't really want to see or talk to him right now because I'm tired and angry.

His sleep issues mean that in about 2 and a half years I've only slept a full nights sleep maybe 10 times. Every morning I wake up feeling more tired than when I went to bed.

I don't know if this really counts, but yesterday I got a leaf in my shoe on the way to the bus stop. While trying to take it out, the neighborhood cat came up and started meowing at me. Once I got the leaf out of my shoe, I started walking toward the bus stop again, but the cat followed me. I spend a good five minutes trying to get the cat to stop following me so I wouldn't lead it onto a busy road, missing my bus in the process. So I was late to work because of a leaf and a cat.

Oh, man, it's good to know I'm not the only one. Overslept this morning because I stayed up too late last night. Wash load with work clothes wasn't transferred to dryer so had to wait to get dry pants. Opened dryer and discovered that the pants were actually my teenage son's. Luckily I had a pair I could wear in the closet, but no matching top, so I had to start over with the dryer. Arrived at work and discovered that the coworker who covers my phone when I'm away didn't come in today so my boss was (unhappily) covering my desk.
