Wednesday 3-point update [More:]
1. I bought a half-dozen eggs last week and all the eggs had a double yolk.

2. Working from home today, and I want to go out for some fresh air but I'm waiting for Royal Mail to deliver a parcel that I need to sign for. I already had to arrange redelivery when they left a card through my letterbox. The postman has usually been and gone by now.

3. A new series of The Apprentice starts tonight which will, no doubt, be the subject of the day's discussion tomorrow in the office.
1. I might have finally sold my car! This eliminates a whole mess of problems for us.
2. They've been remodeling the downstairs apartment, so there's been hammering and drilling and sawing for a week, but I think they're almost done.
3. I found $20 in the laundry last night!

1. Our apartment looks like there has been a burglary. Gotta find some time to tidy today.
2. Booked a massage for the morning of my Entire Day to Myself.
3. Finishing work at lunchtime today. Yay!

1. My throat is sore and raspy and my nose is runny, but it's easy to take a day off when you have every day off.
2. After returning from a much-needed trip to the quiet of my childhood home, the ringing in my ears, which had accompanied me everywhere for months, is gone.
3. Keeping my fingers crossed after a good interview with the city Department of Housing Preservation and Development last week.

1. It's supposed to be in the 70s and sunny for the rest of the week, so I did a hasty ankle-shave in anticipation of wearing cropped pants. Didn't go anywhere near high enough.

2. I really like reading the book I'm reading because the main male love interest, who is big and burly and manly and yet gentle and kind, has the same name as my sweetie. y0m.

3. I really really really need to go eat something, as I am in that "gonna puke if I don't get something to absorb my morning drugs" phase. But of course I'm still sitting here.

1. Collided with someone in volleyball this morning, jammed a finger. It is only slightly swollen, and I can move it. However it hurts like a sonofagun. Hope it's not broken. Plus, the guy was pissed at ME, and I was the one who got hurt.

2. Wife is getting MOHS on her nose. She rescheduled it for tomorrow, and tomorrow I have something for work I HAVE to be at, no matter what. So wife will undergo the first part of it, at least, alone. I feel terrible about it, since she was there for my two MOHS procedures. But nothing to be done about it.

3. After TWO indoor air complaints all of last school year, I am inundated with them now. Which means lots of monitoring. I have to go out right now and tell a teacher that, while the dust level in her room is not bad, according to every objective criteria, it is a bit higher than I usually see, and due to all of the CRAP in her room, such as overstuffed chairs, stuffed animals, fabric on the walls, etc. They tend to not like hearing that they are agents in their own probs.

1. Trying to decide what to do with myself Thanksgiving week. My choices are family in Virginia and family in Florida. Each has disadvantages, as does forgetting the whole thing and staying home with the cat.

2. Eating a lot of homemade Cincinnati Chili this week with much hot sauce. It gives me strength at work, where the default temperature in my office is set at just above Ice Well.

3. Online dating still blows. And not in a good way.

What? *runs off to check weather* OMG!

1. I get to meet a dear friend for pho tonight and the rainy weather is a perfect match.

2. My dear friend who has been in recovery for a drinking problem disappeared from our house yesterday and I'm very afraid for her right now. I've sent her messages that I will come get her day or night and love her no matter what but thus far no one has heard from her.

3. Sometimes my job (which I'm extrememly grateful for) makes me feel like I'm stuck in Office Space writing TPS reports.

1. I woke up at 3:30 last night, having had a bad dream. It sucked and made me cry.
2. Yesterday I ate Spam for the first (and likely last) time ever. It was....salty.
3. I babysat a little bit yesterday when one of our patient's mothers left her other kids in the waiting room. They were way too young, so I plopped down and they played with my hair. It was kind of like pet therapy, to steal a phrase from a coworker.
4. Going camping this weekend and will be 100% untethered to the internet or phone. Haven't done that in ages. Looking forward to it in many ways. Can't wait to go birding, for example. :-)

1. Adrenaline got me through the last two days as I was running around with a cold, but today I am pooped.

2. Had an opportunity for an interesting new opera commission but it is falling through due to *lack of funds*. Can't really afford to do anything on spec on that kind of scale, so even though I quite like the composer, I think it is a no-go. :(

3. Behind, behind in all my stuffs. Feels overwhelming.

I bought a half-dozen eggs last week and all the eggs had a double yolk.

Not as uncommon as you might think! When hens first start laying, there's a brief period where their reproductive system isn't quite synchronized. Double yolks are common during that period. (Less common, and far more icky, are eggs without shells.) So the egg producer in this case probably bought a bunch of chicks at one time. They're all the same age and all started laying at the same time and are all going through the chicken version of really awkward adolescence. Except instead of having a face covered in zits, they lay eggs with two yolks.

And this concludes today's poultry dialogue.

1. Reconnected with a friend from way back this weekend. We became friends (and dated briefly) in 1992, and were good friends even after he moved away, though we didn't talk often and lived in different parts of the country. We lost touch completely 5 or 6 years ago because of stuff we were both going through at the time. Several months ago he moved to the Bay Area; he looked me up last month and got in touch. We had a wonderful time hanging out on Sunday. It was like those years hadn't passed at all. It was so easy, and so rejuvenative, and I'm very grateful that he's so much closer now.

2. Things at work have been *really* crazy since I got a call on Thursday morning from the wife of one of our faculty members. She (the faculty member) "got sick" the previous day during an undergrad class and had been taken to the hospital, where she had emergency surgery. The story that came out over the ensuing hours was that "got sick" meant "nearly bled to death as a result of an ectopic pregnancy." She lost two thirds of her blood and was nearly gone, but she's doing fine now and is at home. I feel so horrible for them -- they were trying to get pregnant, obviously, and she didn't know that she was. What an awful to find out both that you were pregnant, and aren't anymore. Anyhow, I've been the one in charge of dealing with all the fallout and coordinating the flowers, helping hands, etc. It's much more work than one would think.

3. In lieu of anything that really constitutes a number three: I had some rocking takeout Hunan tofu for lunch yesterday. I was skeptical. I don't really even like tofu, and I don't know why I ordered it. But it was yummy, and I have some leftover for breakfast.

Ooh, my sympathies to you on the Mohs procedure; my sweetie had that done in July.

Incidentally, "Mohs" is a person's name -- I figure that, as thrilling as it is to have a POG-sized hole in your face, at least we're at the place where they invented the damn thing. Even if Dr. Fred Mohs' son (Not-Dr. Fred Mohs) is kind of an old, conservative jerkface who doesn't like anybody messing with his way of life.

1. Day five of my migraine. I'm wearing a hat and sunglasses in the house to keep out the light. I also finally broke down and called my doctor. She's an hour north of me and I can't drive up there feeling like this, especially since it's sunny out. Here's to hoping she'll call in a prescription for emergency migraine meds.

2. Stayed home because of said migraine. The BF is home today too. We're trying to figure out what to do with our day, considering I'm a vampire now and want to avoid sunlight at all costs.

3. I made my first post to MeTa last night. It didn't get deleted and people made comments, so that's good.

1. After the realization i could feasibly travel yesterday, it turns out i may not be able to after all because of conflicts. I'm still trying to sort it out but what a damper.

2. For no real reason i have zero motivation today. I haven't even checked my email. Attempts to kick my own ass are very feeble. There is nothing pressing but things that should get done. Blah. It's like a zen state without the enlightenment, i'm just happy unwanted music is not looping through my head.

3. I can't even pick a third thing. I will make myself pick a third thing. Been getting in touch with old friends. So far so good.

1. NARA's Know Your Records was an intro to genealogy thing and since all the other volunteers are big into it, I figured I would go and check it out and see how it was. It was interesting, but I'm not sure if it's something I want to spend a lot of time on. I have other hobbies to abandon.

2. I had excellent luck when I got home and was able to get in an unmuffled zill practice. I love it when I get a chance to play unmuffled. (Normally I would just say fuckit and play them unmuffled all the time, but I think my downstairs neighbors would kill me.)

3. My aunt lost her fucking mind and sent me a huge check for my birthday and while most of it went to school (and to restart my oshit fund which was depleted to pay for fall's tuition), I made sure to spend a bit on dance stuff that I'm super duper excited about.

Thank you, both here and email, for the MOHS thoughts. It will go fine, but since it is on the nose, there is a lot of "stuff" around the appearance on one's face. I have had it twice, and it was not fun. My wife's spot is smaller, I think, than mine were. I am just bummed that I can't be there, during.

(((Eideteker)))

1) my own personal oshit fund (thanks for that sperose) is currently looking anemic owing to some joint house, vehicle and furniture upgrades (which leads directly to...)

2) NEW (to us) CAR!!! omg! it is black, manual transmission (!), de-badged, unGODly powerful, incredibly luxurious and quiet inside, and when you get up close and the turbo kicks in, it sounds just a teensy bit throaty and awesome, owing to a surprisingly tasteful aftermarket exhaust upgrade. Basically it's a ridiculously fast luxury car that looks neither ridiculous, luxurious, nor fast on casual inspection, all of which are good qualities in our books. The mister is ditching his '03 WRX, which is endlessly fun to drive, but a tad small, and I'm ditching my sad old beater (Volvo 850 sedan), whose primary role over the past year has been "birdshit collector", owing to how vanishingly rarely it gets driven.

3) someone, somewhere has it worse than I do, or I can only assume so, as I just (finally, after endless weeks of nagging) received a contract from one of our suppliers that was not only 3 months late, it also had a large shoe track in the middle of it :\

1. I fell in love with a house last night. There is a slim chance they will accept an offer of an amount that I can afford, and I am getting too in love with it for the slimness of that possibility.

2. I have mixed feelings about the above. I like my apartment. I am comfortable in it. But this is just too good a market for a first-time home buyer to ignore.

3. I seriously do not feel like working today. More so than usual.
posted by amro 06 October | 14:51
Hey Danf: you need to take a sharpie to the bandages and write "KNIFE FIGHT!!!" on it.

I'm just sayin'.

1. The article I couldn't email my editor about yesterday (THE SHOUTING THREAD) is up, I'm proud of it (and happy with what the graphics department did with the Twitter stuff) and one of the subjects of it, @badbanana, complimented me in email.

2. It has been raining; not heavy, refreshing, and the first morning in months I didn't get the sun in my eyes from my bedroom window in the early AM (well, early for me).

3. Had enough pastrami and sauerkraut to make two Rueben sandwiches but only two slices of rye bread... so... SuperRueben!!
posted by oneswellfoop 06 October | 16:39
Here I was all set to be like Nuh-UHHHH! but then I realized it's usage what rules the use: if there's such a thing as no-cheese pizza there must also be room in the world for a Reuben made with pastrami.

1. Husband is working 16 hour shifts. As he pointed out this morning, he went to engineering school so he wouldn't have to work a bunch of batshit crazy hours.

2. Said crazy hours are preventing us from having the inevitable get-rid-of-the-cat conversation, much to my relief.

3. I feel like I spent all day yelling at people to stop acting crazy. Which is crazy. I just need to calm. down.

UPDATE:
1. After some drama with the pharmacy and my insurance ($100+ for four pills, are you nuts?!) I have working migraine medicine! I feel so much better!

2. The BF and I have been playing cards all day. I have been beating him with the exception of the last half hour. I like that.

3. I am making pasta for dinner tonight. Yum.

Thanks guys. I'm:

1. Under heavy deadline pressure at work.
2. Getting poorly-timed drama from my ex.
3. Facing the brutal NYC apartment market.

That's the short version. If you want the long version, IM me or meet me for dinner. >.<

1. It's getting chilly in Florida. I wore jeans tonight and I was still a bit cold.

2. On Saturday I was watching my nephew in my home. I wasn't in the room with him when he picked up a 10 lb. dumbbell and dropped it on both of his feet. He broke three toes. He had a cast on each foot from toe to knee. Today he saw the orthopedic doctor and got cast "shoes". He has autism and is a toe walker. Now he cannot use his toes and can barely walk in the shoes. I feel terrible.

3. It's the same grind: work, cleaning, homework, cooking, baseball games, practice, repeat.

1. I am one with minecraft.

2. So when the internet died - apparently RIP my modem, old age takes its toll - I was not too happy. It's ok though - you can play minecraft offline. Yay! What you cannot do is get the email from the old friend who is in town one night only & making dinner at another old friend's house. Boo! And I checked my email on my phone too but I guess I just missed it somehow. But it all seems to be working now, so, phew. Cranky that I missed a shrimp dinner with fresh Charleston shrimp, though.

3. House is half green, half primered, looking way way better. Now if son will just keep this industrious phase up. . .
