How do you think Michael Wesely made these photographs? →[More:]Hello all,

I am intrigued by these photographs and have many questions abuot them, perhaps some of you would know more.

How do you think Michael Wesely made these photographs?

Pinholes? Diazo film? Neutral density filters?

Did any of you see the actual exhibition at the MOMA?
How were the images displayed?
How big were they?
Were they on photosensitive paper or digital prints?

Etc.

Those have to be some CRAZILY small pinholes, no? Something so small that such a lengthy exposure doesn't just result in ALL WHITE!

Yeah, they're really long exposure pinholes. Here's a Make video on how to make them; I don't know specifically about the paper Wesely used but I think actually it was lithography plates and not paper at all. Here's an article on his work and that of Justin Quinnell, who does similar stuff.

Color version of MOMA construction, which was an experiment at that time (PDF).

How does he do it? Really solid tripod, neutral density filters, and "experiencing the time". I'd like to see his camera set-up, which he says is "a bit oversized; so that once you see the camera you get the feeling: "do not even try to think about moving me"."
