Good News, Everybody! Glad that whole recession-thingy is over! I've really been enjoying my substantive wage increases and my house is rising in value. [More:]

Yes, I know those aren't really the measures of recession.

The group that makes these decisions is called the Business Cycle Dating Committee. I don't understand why the business cycle can't arrange its own hookups, but whatever.
Dammit I can't figure out this Read More thing! What am I doing wrong?

Oh yes, how I'm glad it's over too. My paycheck goes back to 'normal' on the first of the month, after 12 months of a 6% paycut (aka 'furlough). But they told us on Friday that they'd approved a 5% increase in the amount we contribute every month to the employee pension system, beginning in July. So at least I'll have 9 months of receiving a paycheck that reflects the salary at which I was hired. I guess that's something.

Hee!!

Yeah, I saw this on CNN earlier and I was kinda "...bzuh?" They said it ended in June 2009 - I thought, hmmm, after the stimulus money kicked in - but now they're afraid it's going to be a double-dip recession - huh, after the stimulus money petered down. Kind of artificial, then.

Which country are you talking about? Here in Japan the recession is not yet over at all.

I saw this headline today and practically spat my coffee at the screen. What a bunch of dicks.

What they meant: "Unless we all start saying it's better no one will start acting like it's better and if no one starts acting like it's better then it'll never get better so everybody start saying it's better and then it'll get better OK? La la la la la la la la I can't hear you, cratering housing market that isn't coming back for a generation la la la la la la..."

I found no reason to believe them the last several times they declared a recession over. Actually, it's just a return to the long-running process of the Rich getting richer and everybody else falling behind after a brief reversal in which even the Rich fell somewhat behind. Still, the Real Estate bubble hasn't fully deflated yet and we essentially have a Dead Economy Walking here. I remain rather proud that I never bought a house, an SUV or an iPhone when I temporarily could afford one.

Stop that BitterOldPunk, you're ruining it!!

/me sticks fingers in ears.

(Personally, we didn't have such a bad recession in Aus, and specifically personally Dr SO has a job now, so the pompomhousehold is doing OK. She even brought me home booze and a videogame last night. Whee!)

Fortunately tech seems to be doing pretty well so Ms. O and I are OK for the moment but we never feel very comfortable. You never know when the bottom is going to drop out.

We have 10 furlough days this year, so paychecks will be smaller. Insurance went up a tiny bit but not much.

Next school year, however, is when we go off the cliff. As of now, there will only be 75% of current budget available, due to lagging tax revenue.

There's a Dating Committee? Can they get me some cute dates?

OK, the recession is when the economy is headed down, the recovery is when it is headed up. Obviously from the bottom it still looks like the bottom, but it is not downhill anymore.
