Going Under: a doctor's downfall, and a profession's struggle with addiction.
Before I clicked on the link, my mind went immediately to "I bet it's about an anesthesiologist." Sadly yes. Most likely specialty to become drug-addicted.

That was a fascinating and heartbreaking article. Thanks for posting.

My sister and stepfather are gas-passers, I will test them for drug addiction at the soonest opportunity.

That was sad. Interesting theory about the patients' exhaled anesthetics priming them for addiction.

What a waste. When you read about the theory around exhaled drugs, it seems so obvious. Why did it take so long to figure that out?

That was really interesting. One thing I wish they'd mentioned is the insane stress of being a resident - especially in such a competitive program. That's got to be a contributor as well.

Yeah, it's like a fully-developed formula for failure:
  1. Put people under enormous stress for years on end
  2. Give them extensive knowledge of and ready access to free addictive substances
  3. Place them in a physical environment where they are exposed to low (?) levels of said substances
  4. Wonder why they get addicted
  5. Destroy their lives by taking away the very thing they were seeking to gain by doing 1-3
  6. PROFIT! Everyone loses.
