For those who think snakes are cute:
he Eastern Brown Snake is the second most venomous land snake in the world after the Inland Taipan. Their venom is very toxic, and can be fatal; even juveniles have caused human fatalities. The venom contains both neurotoxins and blood coagulants. Eastern Brown Snakes are also aggressive. Compared to most snakes that will flee when ever possible, Brown Snakes are much more likely to stand their ground, heightening the danger in an encounter. Without medical treatment, death is highly likely. from Wikipedia

This snake was in our home...

omg, i forgot about spiders. i'll be ok, really

When I first moved into my house almost 20 years ago, I couldn't go a week without some cat trying to bring one of these in to eat:

I'd come home and there'd be one on the floor, stock still, sometimes with the blood spurted from its eye, and the cats nowhere to be found.

Then the became an endangered species and they started disappearing.

This is the first one I've seen in a decade.

Nice big fat one. Hope it has lots of babies. Baby horney toads are the absolute cutest!

This is a burrowing crawfish. We have many dozens of them living in our front yard.

This guy was crossing my road a few months ago. I took his picture, then carried him to the other side so he wouldn't get squashed.

Sadly, some stachybotrys is the only non-mammilian life form that I can find in all of my photos.

TheoE: I actually love your school of fish pic. Strange, too, because I dreamed I was taking care of an aquarium last night.

I'm so happy for this theme. Thanks to all the bunnies who helped me plan my Chicago get-away for last weekend, I have all kinds of nifty pictures from the Aquarium! Here are a few:

Irig.rorriM, I knew that pirhanas were sparkly! I discovered this during my visit to the London Aquarium and was bumfoozled. Isn't that neat?!

It really is neat, Specklet! The flashy sparkles really surprised me, and those pictures are great. Thanks for sharing! :)

A crab at Cape san Blas this summer:

Pictures of a second attempt at raising black swallowtail caterpillars into butterflies. The first attempt went horribly awry; the caterpillars had eaten nearly all of our parsley, so I bouight some at the grocery store. Ooops--the pesticides on the parsley sent Sticky to an early grave. This time we made the trek to Whole Foods for some organic parsley, and it appears that Parsley Boy and Parsley Eater will live to fly free as butterflies.
