The Pirate Latitudes: when the French luxury cruise ship Le Ponant was captured by a raggedy, hopped-up band of Somali pirates last spring, in the Gulf of Aden, it looked as if the bandits had bitten off more than they could chew. But after a week-long standoff, they got what they had come for—a $2.15 million ransom.
I was wondering as I read this, "what happens when actors ignore the state?", and then got to the end, realized the answer was "basically nothing", and then got a bit freaked out.

Langewiesche has an annoyingly snotty tone for someone who is mostly transcribing from a book written by someone else. But then again, Vanity Fair is written by and for our betters, so we should be appropriately grateful.
