Modern Family wins the comedy Emmy. Am I missing a great show? [More:]The only exposure I've had to this series was when it was part of a Top Chef challenge. I remember the cast being chubby guy, hot Latina, some kids, and some standard Hollywood-issue mom and dad types. Is it actually great? Would it pass the Bechdel test (not a perfect measure and many shows I like don't pass, but I still find a good barometer of stuff I like)?

Also, yay! Jim Parsons rocks!
Somehow I totally screwed up my link and the "Read more" part of this. First MeCha post fail.

The look and feel of the show reminded me of Arrested Development, but I didn't find the characters as memorable, or the jokes as funny. The actors are good; & I thought the slapstick moments were well-done, but overall I didn't enjoy it that much. It may well have improved since the first couple of episodes, which were the only ones I saw.

I think it's very funny, and it's in fact the only comedy that my husband and I watch. And yeah, we liked Arrested Development too.

It's a decent show. It's not too stupid and not too predictable for a 30 minute sitcom. The characters appeal.

Yeah, there was only one episode this past season that was painfully dumb and sitcommy (the one with Minnie Driver) and I had to turn it off. Otherwise it's reliably entertaining.

Oh you know what? It occurs to me that we find a lot of it funny because of the bits about parenting a newborn. We just went through all of that first-time parent craziness so a lot of the insane things that the new parents are doing are super-relatable right now to us.

I love it, it's an excellent character-driven, rather than plot-driven sitcom, with a good ensemble cast. The episode about the fencing competition was perfection.

I watched a little of it, and it feels like I've seen it before and not in a good way - ham-handed with overused character types. I can only find snippets to watch, so maybe complete episodes are better.

I think, for me, the comparison to Arrested Development doesn't serve this show well. I watched all three seasons of AD on Netflix last month while I was convalescing. Some parts of the third season are a little weak, but the entire second season is genius - better than I remembered.

I can't believe Parks and Recreation wasn't even nominated!

Yeah, word--I can't believe Parks and Recreation got demoted to mid-season replacement, either. I like that show a lot.
